Swallowing vitamins
i need to take large soft gel renal multivitamins. Will I still be able to swallow these after VSG surgery?
You might have trouble swallowing them immediately post-op while you're healing and swollen. Can you cut them up? Is there a liquid option that you could take temporarily? I recommend talking to your urologist and WLS surgeon about this to figure out a good solution for you in the immediate post-op period.

Thank you both for great advice. The vitamin can't be cut but it goes down easy. I'll check with my dr.
Every surgeon has slightly different instructions.
Mine said we were OK swallowing pills as large as M&Ms the day after surgery, so I didn't need to skip any of my important meds. I have a couple of larger pills that are supplements and I was able to swallow them after a couple of weeks, when I transitioned to soft foods. Those larger pills weren't for anything that I couldn't safely skip them for that time.
Other surgeons I've heard of want all of your meds to be liquid for various lengths of time.
You'll need to talk to your surgeon about your specific meds and coordinate with your other docs about alternatives if they cannot be skipped for a short while.
I would guess that most people are back to swallowing any size pill they could before, by about the time they are on "regular" foods diet. For some plans, that's as early as 4-5 weeks, for some it's a couple of months.

I am 3 weeks post op and my surgeon wants his patients to take chewable vitamins and some other chewable supplements as well. I was told no to capsules, tablets, gelcaps and gummies for now.
I think everyone gets different advice. I take a capsule of Omeprazole and a Multivitamin capsule each day per doctor's orders, but am told to crush my Calcium and eat it which I really, really hate!!! I'll need to crush my Calcium for at least 3 months which is awful. But I was taking capsules 3 days post-op.
Good luck!
My surgeon told me I could take any pills that were no bigger in diameter than an aspirin right after surgery. After about 2 weeks I could take anything. I asked about capsules and things and he said as long as the circumference wasn't larger than an aspirin and to aim it down the throat longways lol. I never had any issues.
