Hi there! I'm new to this group. I'm 34 and weigh about 294lbs. My husband and I are thinking about starting a family. However I've also gone back and forth with the idea of getting VSG. Has anyone had VSG before getting pregnant? I'm not getting any younger so I'm trying to figure out if we should try and start a family first. Thanks for your input!

Thank you Mahonia!! Beautiful name! Right now I have a regular period but have PCOS, am pre-diabetic and have Hypothyroidism. I think I will definitely have a talk with my OBGYN.

A number of people here have had successful pregnancy post-op, however it is advised to wait at least a year post-op before getting pregnant (something to talk with your surgeon about). In theory, your pregnancy will be healthier if YOU are healthier. So it's definitely worth considering!

One of the big reasons I had VSG was so that I could be in good shape to have a healthy pregnancy.

I had surgery about a week after my 31st birthday. I lost 140lb in the year post-op and got to a "normal" BMI. I had my IUD removed at 13 months post-op, found myself pregnant three weeks later, and had an incredibly healthy and uneventful pregnancy. (I had to work with my OB and surgeon to figure out how to eat differently during those 9 months, but we made it work.) My wonderful, healthy little boy will be turning 2 on Halloween and I'm glad everything worked out well!

Most surgeons will recommend that you wait at least one year post-op before getting pregnant. By that point, your weight should have evened out, you'll be set in your proper post-op eating patterns, and you'll be able to take in enough volume of food to appropriately nourish the growing baby.

Let me know if you have any questions, I'm happy to help!

Hi! I'm not getting married until October 2018, so we won't be trying to kids for at least 2 years. But this was something that has been more on my mind recently.

My surgeon told me that Its fine to have wls and have kids. But that was a few years ago. Now that life is going on it's something I need to address.

Would you mind telling a little about how your eating was? I got off track (boooo hissss) but I'm back in it and loving it again. I meet with a new on/gyn this month anyway due to moving too far from my old one - which I didn't really care for. So I will be discussing my WLS with him too.

At the seminar I went to about wls, the surgeon said that wls can reverse pcos. He said to be very careful if you don't want to get pregnant, because your fertility can go up. It wasn't a worry for me since I'm past all that. But I thought it was interesting.

I suggest tou have your AMH and FSH tested before making any decisions. This will give you an idea of well your body is producing eggs. At 34 it shouldn't be too much of a concern, but at 37 it could be (and even morseo if you want more than one child).

Being obese while trying to conceive and while pregnant is less than ideal. But you need good eggs to make it happen. Definitely get that checked out.

My oldest was 3 when I had my VSG. I have had two more kids since surgery and had no issues with my sleeve and being pregnant. Just make sure you get enough protein and take all the vitamins and supplements, etc. I actually got pregnant with our middle child only 6 months post op(woops!!). My surgeon wasnt that worried about, I think I was more scared/worried about it than he was! I kept losing while pregnant but baby will take what it needs first. Everything was healthy and great though through both pregnancies after surgery! Good luck!!
