PPI/antacids
Hi again,
I was just wondering are proton pump inhibitors a way of life post surgery? If so is it temporary or can I expect to take them forever? Does anyone not have to use them? As a nurse I know there are long term side effects which concern me
Many of us take them for a few months post-op and then stop. However, there is a risk for developing GERD/reflux with the VSG and then all bets are off.

PPIs are very difficult to stop once you are on them. They cause rebound reflux once stopped which I'm sure complicates matters. Thanks so much for your response.
About half of VSGers develop gerd after surgery, and they would need to be on a PPI long term. Many of those don't get it for a while, sometimes not until a few years after WLS.
Do you have a history of reflux?

I've not been officially diagnosed, but I get heartburn if I don't eat right, and with certain foods.
Have you had a scope done as part of your preop? If not, you should ask for one. Lots of folks have silent gerd for years, and can have damage they aren't aware of. You should get it checked before making final decisions.
