Sleeve Angry at 5am
hi all! As a newbie trying to navigate through these first few weeks, I'm wondering if the 5am gut wrenching pain I'm having in my sleeve area is the "new" hunger pang?
i can sometimes keep it at bay for 30- 45 minutes by sip, sip, sipping my water but ultimately I have to have 4oz of broth to calm it down.
thanks for any insight!

Drinking is good. If it helps, go for it.
Maybe it hits at 5 am because you need to drink more before going to bed?

Thanks for this but I drink through the night - like 350-500 mLs of water. I was always dehydrated for years pre-surgery, just hated water. But for the month before and ever since surgery I've been religiously drinking 2500-3000mLs of water a day.
Hmph...well I will keep plugging along.

Are you taking a PPI daily such as Prilosec OTC (omeprazole)? Because what you are describing sounds an awful lot like the acid reflux I experienced many years ago. It always used to hit me after being in bed for a while. If you aren't on one you should be; if you are you may need to adjust the dosage.
Reflux and GERD are known to be issues that develop for some VSGers post-surgery.
Hi Cathy
I am taking omeprazole nightly. I had unfortunately developed GERD about 90 days before surgery and they found a small hiatal hernia as well. My GERD was fairly minimal and was well controlled on 75-150 mgs of ranitidine (Zantac). I also sleep with the head of my bed elevated 5". Ugh, so hhmmm I guess I will contact my surgeon and get their thoughts.
fThanks for your thoughts I really appreciate it.

Sometimes I'd get tummy "weirdness" (more like uncomfortable hunger-pressure) from no PPI early in the morning. Also, some other PPIs work better than others. Omeprazole was meh for me, but Dexilant was amazing - until my insurance quit covering it.
As for "gut-wrenching pain," that's an automatic surgeon call. It is probably not urgently awful, but don't ever hesitate to check. That's why we paid them so much money for surgery! And follow-up care is a big part of their job.
I follow a ketogenic diet post-op. I also have a diagnosis of binge eating disorder. Feel free to ask me about either!
