Bad sunburn before vsg surgery
on 8/8/17 7:36 am
Hi everyone,
I went to the beach almost a week ago (Wednesday) and got a really bad second degree burn on only one leg (bizarre I know). It just blistered yesterday but the blisters opened up and the skin is now raw. I have neosporin and a bandage over it now. I'm worried-- will I still be able to have surgery with this burn?? My surgery is next Monday the 14 so hoping it will be mostly healed by then but I don't know.
Call your surgeon and ask to be sure!

I think it would be unlikely for them to go ahead with the surgery if you have an open wound on your leg. Is it on your thigh?
your surgeon is the only one who can really answer this question.
On one hand you still have 6 days to go ..so you will be healing. Not being able to see how bad it really is ... it might be healed enough by surgery day. But I am going to mention that the night before surgery they have you wash with a very strong soap ... twice. Then right before surgery you have to wipe your body with another strong germ killing towelette and its not exactly a gentle material let alone the ingredients that are in it.
It is possible that they could somehow seal the wound if its not fully healed ... like a liquid bandage. I don't know ... that is something the surgeon would decide.
If you fall down you just have to get back up.
I did not have to do these things prior to my VSG. I wonder how common it is. I just had to wash with regular Dial soap.

My surgeon gave me some little sponges already soaked in some kind of antibacterial stuff that I had to shower with for 2 evenings prior to and the morning of surgery. Then in the holding area, before I could put on my gown, I had to strip down and wipe off with the towelletes (they warmed them up in the microwave) from head to toe. It was so icky sticky feeling!

Wow. I've never had to do this prior to any surgery I've had! (The "wipe down in the holding area" thing.)
