Tested positive for H-Pylori and the treatment is making me feel worse
I felt good a week ago when I went in for my first surgical consultation starting my 6 month journey to getting the VSG and then I tested positive for H-Pylori and found out my iron level was too low for surgery. I was put on an iron supplement and vitamin C regimen that required taking pills 3 times a day for 1 month and on top of that I tested positive for H-Pylori and was put on a antibiotic regimen where I have to take 2 antibiotics and Pepto four times a day. Since I started these regimens, I feel awful, stomach pain, nausea, metallic taste in my mouth and in general feel worn out. I need some one to tell me it gets better. It is hard to feel this awful.
The iron supplements can do that. Talk to your doc about switching- I can no longer recall which type is typically tolerated better, but ask. The doc should know, but if not post a thread here. Someone will know... Sparklekitty, Grim, Hala or someone from that group is usually very on top of that type of stuff. Hala in particular has to struggle with nutrition and tolerance of items. Antibiotics can also be an issue. I have a strong awful reaction to the cepholaxin family so I don't use it. The desired goal in my case can be met with different antibiotics that don't cause horrible diarrhea. Eat yogurt and other probiotics to help level out your system.

Ferrous sulfate, ferrous gluconate, ferrous fumarate -- any of the ferrous salts -- can cause pretty bad stomach upset.
Carbonyl iron and heme iron are much easier on the stomach, andcare absorbed better too. Especially after surgery.
Take extra Vitamin C with iron. 200 mg of C for every 30 mg of elemental iron.
Do not take iron within 2 hours of calcium, dairy, soy, coffee, tea, etc. Those things inhibit absorption of iron.

I tested positive for H pylori too and the antibiotics did suck, but it helped to take mine with Greek yogurt. This will be over soon and you will be one step closer to surgery and being healthy..and one day you will look back and it will all be a blip on the radar.

My plan allows it, but you'd have to check with your doctor/nutritionist. I like the Oikos Triple Zero and Dannon Light & Fit Greek.

I also had H.pylori, while it was awful because it was all liquid medicine (yuck) I didn't think it was painful. Perhaps your discomfort is actually coming from the iron. Anyway ... yes, it DOES get better. The pills you are taking now are only temporary. The iron will be built up in your system and that nasty bug will be gone, leaving you in better shape for the surgery.
If you fall down you just have to get back up.
I had H pylori several years ago. While, both liquud antibiotics and the pepto were gross, they didn't cause any problems or discomfort. In fact, I immediately started to feel better after my first dose (prior to treatment, every bite of food and drink of water had me writhing in stomach cramps each time I swallowed them down!). Perhaps the iron is the cause of your discomfort?? Hope you feel better soon!
