Hi guys, my surgery is next week and I am trying to buy my vitamins so I'll have them ready post op. There are soooooo many to choose from, any good suggestions on which ones are the best for our sleeve while getting all of the vitamins that are recommended for us in the correct doses? Thank you in advance for any help

For the first four weeks or so post op I took a double dose of Wellesse liquid multi-vitamin. After that I switched to a double dose of Trader Joe's High Potency Chewable multi vitamin. After six months, I cut back to a single dose. I've had blood work done regularly since my surgery (I am four years post op) and my labs have always been great. Plus, I did not spend the insane amounts of money for bariatric specialty vitamins, and as a bonus avoided all those calories and carbs packed into bariatric specialty vitamins. Kind of a cruel trick to bait obese people with vitamins that taste like fake candy IMO!

You probably won't be taking vitamins for the first month (let the stomach heal before the grittiness of vitamins?) This is what I take, and approved by my NUT & surgeon.

Flintstones chewables with iron - 2 per day, taken at least 2 hours away from having calcium because calcium block iron from getting absorbed. After 4 months of these I have been allowed to switch back to a regular multi vitamin pill. I just grab whatever is cheap and has iron. (still taking a double dose)

Viactiv calcium + D chews - 2 per day, at LEAST 2 hours apart from each other and the multi. (although I started taking 3 per day) There is some argument over the TYPE of calcium. Viactiv is calcium CARBONATE and some doctors want you taking calcium CITRATE.

If you fall down you just have to get back up.

OH... and I can switch over to calcium in pill form now ... I just haven't yet because I still have so many of the viactiv ones left.

There really isn't any informed argument. No one without WLS absorbs calcium carbonate very well, and after WLS it is very poorly absorbed. Calcium citrate is much, much better.

My surgeon disagrees and so do my blood tests.

Sigh.... another RNY patient who thinks they know everything about all surgeries and telling a VSG patient what they need. Why are you guys even in the VSG forum?

A newbie who knows all. Good luck to you.

However, to benefit others reading, let me pose a question.

What is the worst case scenario in taking citrate over carbonate? A little more money spent and a little more time initially in finding a brand/store.

What is the worst case scenario in taking carbonate over citrate, which reputable doctors and organizations do not support? Bone loss, fractures, chronic pain, loss of teeth, long-term disability.

Go ahead and play your Russian roulette with your health. I'll make a more intelligent decision and I hope others will as well.
