Introduction and question. :)

Hi, my name is Shanna and I had my sleeve done yesterday. I was supposed to get roux en y, but I have no rotation in my intestines (means they are on opposites sides from where they should be, I guess) so the surgeons decided a sleeve was a safer option. To quote him " we were worried that if you ever ended up needing another surgery there was a risk they would open you up and be lost."

So my question is, how successful can this surgery be? I have PCOS and am Insulin resistant, and was told rny was my best choice, but am not about to turn my nose up at this second chance... just curious about the long term!

VSG patients can lose just as much as RNY patients, it's all about how you work your tool.

Thats what I was hoping to hear. :) I hadnt done much research on sleeves because there was no reason to think I was getting one, lol. Thank you for answering my silly question! Gonna do more reading about ot when I get home. :)

You will be as successful as you work to be :) That's got to be a really weird experience to wake up and find you've had a different surgery than the one you researched and chose.

It was pretty surreal! Especially having them try to explain it when I was just barely awake, lol. Luckily I got to speak with my surgeon again last evening and he said the same as you all. That he felt I would be really successful with the sleeve. He told me that while rny loses faster by the 18 month/ 2 year mark it evens out quite a bit. I am feeling confident about it now. Thanks again for responding. I was feeling a little freaked when I had posted.

I can't imagine! I have no idea why surgeons expect us to be able to process information like this when we're waking up from surgery and all doped up still :P I'm glad you got to talk to him some more than you were more coherent and that it helped to ease your mind.

You'll be awesome and, really, the ways of eating aren't significantly different between RNY and VSG. So the prep you did to prepare your brain for your new lifestyle should all be transferable :D

My Dr really encouraged me to have a by pass but I chose to have the sleeve. No regrets. I know I am losing weight slower but in the end I am losing it.

Good luck!

Thanks again everyone! :) I am home now, and doing really well. I feel a whole lot better about everything now that I have had a chance to process it all and do some reading. Looking forward to this journey! Thanks for the kind words and support. /hugs
