Developing GERD after VSG

Hello,

I am perusing a vertical sleeve gastrectomy approval from my insurance. I am wondering how many people have developed GERD after bariatric vertical sleeve gastrectomy? I currently do not have Gerd however I have read that it is possible to develop it after surgery. What are you doing to manage it? If I do develop gerd wilL I have to have a revision to the RNY?

Good Morning,

I developed GERD after my VSG. The first 6 months was hell with the constant heartburn. I did not want to be on a PPI for an extended period. If I had been willing to stay on the PPI it probably wouldn't have been as bad, but I wasn't willing to do it.

After tons of research, I started taking Mastic Gum and DGL to heal my stomach. (Pathology reports showed that I had chronic gastritis at the time of my VSG) Within a month I was off of all PPI meds and after about 2 months, all of my heartburn was gone. I am almost 3 years out now and I no longer take the Mastic Gum or DGL, mainly because I got out of the habit. When I get heartburn now, I drink 3 drops of Young Living peppermint essential oil in about 4 oz of water and it usually works within 10 minutes or so.

I would never consider a revision to the RNY...it's just not for me.... I swear by the remedies to heal the root cause of the GERD. If you just mask it with PPI's, it will always pop back up.

Best of luck with whatever you decide. VSG has been the absolute best thing I have ever done for myself.

I developed GERD after my VSG. I'd had heartburn exactly twice pre-op. Now, if I don't take my PPI at least every other day, I get it. Also, I have a lot of reflux if I try to lie down too soon after eating.

Despite both new issues, I'd never not have my surgery. It was still entirely worth it.

I never really had any issues with reflux till after getting the sleeve done. It was bad for a while after surgery. I was on a PPI as much as twice a day for a while then I cut down to once a day. I am now almost two years post op and I didn't want to stay on them any longer so I have weaned myself off of them. I make sure that I don't eat within two hours of laying down and if I feel that there's any chance of a reflux issue I take some tums to head it off. They are safer then omeprazole.

I developed GERD after my VSG. I converted to RNY a year ago and the new surgery has controlled my acid. I have a gene mutation that affects the rate I metabolize PPIs, so they were ineffective for me. The only solution was to convert to RNY.

Pre-surgery, I rarely had heartburn. At most I had it after excessive sugar or tomato sauce - maybe one or two days every few months. Post-op, I was on 30mg Lansoprazole for 3 months like all my surgeon's patients and had no GERD issues. I tried to go off it at the end of my prescription and the heartburn was awful...like nothing I've experienced before. I went back on Prevacid over the counter and worked my way down to 15mg every other day with no GERD problems. This week, I'm trying Zantac 150 instead. It doesn't work as well (I need it twice a day), but I'm going to give it a few weeks. I understand being an H2 blocker it's not as hard on you as the PPIs? I'd like to be on nothing, but we'll see.

There are lots of people here willing to answer questions. Ask all you want. You'll find a lot more range of answers and help that way, rather than asking one person.

Sharing phone numbers with random people on the internet is not a very good idea.
