Doc wont give me a referral
I am seriously considering WLS, but my doctor is not willing to listen to me when I even bring it up. She believes everything can be done by eating right and working out everyday. Which I know eating right and having an active lifestyle helps, it's been 2 years of those 2 things, and not much of a difference. I have lost inches, but no significant weight loss.
What do I do if my doc refuses to refer me?
If you qualify for the surgical treatment of obesity which is in general 35 BMI with co-morbidities (obesity related health issues), 40 without and they are not listening to your request for a referral to a bariatric program, find a new Doctor. While making healthy choices in eating and activity are a definitely part of the equation losing 100+ pounds and maintaining that kind of loss (especially if you have any health issues) without surgical assistance while not impossible is also more "results not typical."
You could provide her with studies on the benefits of treating obesity, the negatives to delaying treatment but frankly if she isn't aware of them... I question her abilities even for treating the common cold ;)
Contact the bariatric surgeon in your area and ask which Primary Care Providers are referring to them in your area (hopefully they will be in network.)
P.S. https://youtu.be/aZ0DuRD_gXw she needs to watch this.
She works for you.
This might be a hard conversation but one you should have... "I have researched WLS and understand it may be an option for the treatment of my obesity (and related conditions), I understand your personal feelings but I do not share them. Will you refer me to a specialist in obesity treatment or should I consider looking for another Dr?"
This is a really great script suggestion. I can think of a number of times where this would have been useful for me to say to a doctor!
