Why did you choose the sleeve?

I have a consultation with a bariatric surgeon this month and i had my hopes set on vsg. Rny scares me. I dont think i want to literally change the way my body functions like they do for rny. I know people who have had gastric bypass and they say i should do that instead. I have done tons of research on both but i wonder why you guys may have chose vsg?

For me it was because I had dealt with a lot of IBS issues over the years and so messing with my intestines freaked me out.

Had VSG on 9/28/15

Lost 161 lbs since surgery, LOST 221 lbs overall so far!!

I went with VSG because I too was concerned with malabsorption and the possibility of dumping. You still have to take your vitamins with VSG but I felt it was less risk for deficiencies.

Same as the others - it felt less scary and risky, though it seems like the majority of people do fine with either RNY or VSG.

pretty much same at the others. It just made more sense to me to "downsize" my stomach rather than create a new fake one and reroute stuff. Also less time on the operating table and faster recovery. I know I made the right decision. Also I have known more rny people with regain. Weight loss is really just as good with vsg. My surgeon thinks rny will eventually become passee. GL Diane S

When I first looked at weight loss surgery years ago I thought the band was the way I wanted to go. But I had no bariatric coverage so it was a no go at the time. I obviously didn't research enough because I had no clue about self pay or Mexico. Fast forward about 8 years and I was determined to pay for it somehow but figured with my weight at that point that bypass was all that could help me..and that is expensive. Then I truly began digging and found out about vsg and realized there was financing available. After 2 consults both doctors were certain that vsg would be effective for me as long as I was committed to the process and willing to change my lifestyle and eating habits. So I pulled together the cash and I did it. And I do not regret it. I have lost over 100 lbs since I started my journey a year ago. I think you can be successful or fail with either surgery..and I must admit I was relieved that my intestines were not being changed..however if bypass was what I would have needed I would have done it in a heartbeat if I could pay for it. That's how much my life has already improved by losing this weight. And should I ever have any complications and need to revise to bypass, then I will adjust to the changes. I never want to go back to the old me.

Thank you all for the help. You have validated all that has been going through my mind. I agree i do not want to alter my inner anatomy when i can just downsize what i have. Thanks again!

Existing reflux and the sleeve are a really bad combination!!

I wouldn't be too worried about the extra rerouting of the RNY. It's a very safe surgery and the FAR better choice if you have acid reflux.
