Can you ever drink during a meal ever-- even a bit!

Is it physically possible? Yes.

Is it a good idea if you want to lose and/or maintain? Hell no.

Doesn't matter if it's water or wine, a sip or an entire glass. Still not a good idea.

not ever. Even a sip of water help turn solid food in tryout sleeve into soupy food that leaves the sleeve quickly, leaving you hungry sooner.

there is really no need to eat and drink at the same time for anyone. It is just a habit.

I take a sip of water now and again to help something go down/when something is dry. It's not every meal, but it happens and my surgeon's office actually doesn't limit VSG patients from drinking while eating at all except to recommend not to because there is discomfort associated with it.

It's not recommended, but it's not the same as someone drinking with RNY either.

I do not have any pain, there was minimal pain with surgery. If you're pre-op and you're asking about drinking with the sleeve during meals, I can tell you that you will get used to it. It's funny the things that seemed like such a big deal prior to surgery don't anymore after.

I will not likely have dumping syndrome, but I haven't yet eaten anything that would trigger it to know. It's uncommon in VSG patients though. On the same token, I don't really fear it anymore (and know RNY would have been fine).

It is pretty much the same as someone drinking with RNY though.

When sleevers drink on an empty stomach, the pyloric valve opens and the liquid goes right through. When you eat dense food, the pyloric valve closes and keep food in the stomach. You feel fullness. Add drinking while eating, the pyloric valve opens, food washes through. You won't get the same fullness feeling, and will have room for more food. Drinking while eating can defeat the purpose of having a sleeve.

I used to drink constantly during meals...which is why I was able to eat the mountains of food that I did! My guidelines after surgery were to stop drinking 15 mins before eating, and not to drink for at least 30 mins after. I have since found that stopping beforehand is pointless, because it goes right through your stomach. I do drink up until the time I eat sometimes, with no issues.

However, I do not drink during meals unless, as Erin pointed out, something seems not to be going down, then I might take a small sip. Otherwise, I wait the 30 mins to drink anything. It seemed so hard at first, I even had to set a timer so I wouldn't drink too soon. Now sometimes it seems like a long time, but then I get to doing something and realize maybe an hour has gone by and I didn't even notice.

It just becomes a natural part of the way you eat. I don't usually order anything bu****er at a restaurant unless I know the meal is going to take a while to be prepared, then I might get an iced tea. But once I start eating, unless we hang around shooting the breeze for a couple of hours, a drink usually goes to waste lol.
