I woke up choking on acid this morning and it was horrible. I'm taking nexium! I'm so scared of esophageal damage and stomach ulcers. What has your surgeon said about this if it happens to you?

Certain foods trigger acid more so than others. Track what you eat (if you aren't already) and stay away from foods that cause it such as coffee/caffeine, spicy food and anything acidic. Definitely talk to your surgeon or PCP about what meds to take. They can change your prescription or dosage.

I used to have this problem prior to surgery and I finally figured out that I couldn't eat anything before going to bed. I do know that something sweet really triggered choking. I sometimes had to sleep in an incline position. Since my WLS, I don't have that issue. Maybe its what you're eating. Try not to eat at least 1 hour before bed. I would also contact your surgeon. I know exactly how you felt this morning. Its pretty scary.

Sounds like it's time to do a hardcore elimination diet and figure out what is causing your reflux. For me - it's fructose. And it's a pain in the butt to diagnose.

Hum, this is worth a try. I haven't had any fruit since surgery, so it can't be fructose for me. But it might be artificial sweeteners in protein shakes/bars, or decaf coffee, or whey protein. Maybe I'll try getting a non-whey protein and going back on a liquid diet and slowly reintroducing foods. What a pain!

While I'm not saying it is fructose malabsorption for you - there is fructose in a lot of chewable bariatric vitamins, honey is a high source of fructose, and monk fruit extract which is a sweetener in lots of low cal foods is also high in fructose. So it's not just a matter of "eating fruit." (But who knows what your particular trigger is.)

you might consider seeing a GI doc and doing a medically supervised elimination diet. I wouldn't recommend using any processed foods to begin with - just start with chicken for a week and see how that goes. Then add eggs. Then add cow. Then add milk. Etc.
