Egg vs Almonds

Last night I started to crave almonds so I opened a bag and started to eat them, first time post surgery 5 weeks ago. What shocked me is that I felt no restriction with them. I ate quite a few. This morning I had one egg, microwaved, and with that soft egg, I felt a lot of restriction. I somehow thought dense foods, protein foods, would be harder to consume in quantity... this is confusing.

Almonds aren't dense. They chew down to nothing. Same with crackers and a million other things. Cheese turns back to liquid.

You can eat a million calories of those things. Just don't get started. Have some chicken, and you'll see just how tiny your stomach is.

I have exactly the same results still at 1 year 2 months post-op. I have to ban/hide the almonds periodically when the consumption creeps up due to cravings.

Oh holy hell, you are too early to be eating almonds! Protect that staple line! The vagus nerve was cut- you will not experience the "full" feeling like what it used to be so you cannot go by how you feel. Go by measured quantity. Also, almonds are super calorically dense. I did occasionally use them as a snack during the weight loss phase, but I was careful to use the measured out quantity to keep it at 100 calories. There is protein in them, but they do not meet my target of 1 gram of protein for every 10 calories.

My surgeon is pretty anti-nut because one, they chew easily into a paste so don't fill you up and two, they are high in calories in relation to the protein you get. If I have them, I measure out a half a oz and stick to that.

Thanks for the input. I didn't realize that crunchy almonds would be a slider kind of food. I really don't eat nuts much, but the craving hit me. At least I'm not interested in any more. It was weird as this is the first craving I've had since surgery, and weird too because pre op I would never have craved almonds. They aren't one of my go to foods.... at least the scale didn't change from it. What about tofu? I don't buy it because I'm the only person in my family that likes it. But as I now have to always eat protein protein protein, is it good, dense, a slider?

I would think tofu would be a good alternate protien source at least for an occasional change what do you think guys?

Tofu is a great alternative. That is what I eat for lunch or sometimes dinner. That is what my dietitian suggest I eat.

Tofu wouldn't fill me up or help me meet my protein goals anywhere near as well as chicken, eggs, fish, or beef would.

Tofu doesn't seem like a dense protein to me. It reminds me of cottage cheese which is also a kind of slider food.

I think of dense protein as chicken, sausage, beef, pork. Food that's dense but feels a little less dense to me anyway is fish, but it might depend on the kind of fish you get.

Tofu, yogurt, cottage cheese, cheese I consider slider foods even if it is a good source of protein/dairy.

Try using the search bar, you can see past posts of slider foods vs dense protein.
