What about veggies (and fruits)?

I noticed that most of VSGers eat nothing but protein. I am curious whether any of you good folks eat veggies (or fruits). Did your respective surgeons suggest you follow a high protein, low carb diet after the surgery for good?

I am following a diet that is around 900 calories a day and try to get at least 60 gm of protein a day (although I still don't know whether I would qualify for the surgery or not). I eat a maximum of one cup of sauteed veggies or salads a day, and I gave up on fruits altogether. But is this what you folks did a few months before the surgery?

Thanks and best wishes.

My surgeon does not call for low carb after surgery. I do low carb on my own. However, I have always loved fruit. I do eat fruit, but I try to keep it within my limits. Watermelon, lemons, berries are all lower in carbs. I like to make a watermelon drink from just cold water and a bit of melon blended up, it's so refreshing after the gym. Veggies, I do sparingly. Every once in awhile I have a sudden craving for tomatoes and cucumbers lightly salted. I'll eat them then.

My plan requires 60-80 grams of protein a day and 3 meals, with no snacks. These two requirements sort of prevent me from eating much of anything aside from protein since once I get my required protein in at a meal, I've had enough food. I keep my meals to around 4 ounces. My plain says I could eat 8 ounces, but I'd rather under-eat my capacity and ~4 ounces is sufficient.

I'm three years out now and I rarely eat fruit. I was never a big fruit eater pre-op though, so this isn't a big surprise. I'll eat veggies occasionally.

Pre-op? I didn't have a doctor ordered pre-op diet until 2 weeks prior to surgery and then it was 5-6 protein shakes a day. Two months before that I started replacing breakfast and lunch (meals I ate alone) with protein shakes and eating mainly protein for dinner.

I was not required to lose weight pre op and didn't have a pre op diet, but i ate non starchy veggies and meat for about 6 months.

Now I eat protein FIRST because sometimes I can only manage 2 oz. But I try to eat a variety of foods, though not much fruit or bread. About 1000 calories most days. On the days that I go to tri fit class AND row for 30 minutes I have 1200 calories.

My surgeon doesn't call for low carb post surgery but A) at first your capacity is so little, you really can't help but low carb because you can't fit more than protein and B) I have diabetes so it's the best way of eating for me.

I'm about 4 1/2 months out and I'm just starting to reintroduce veggies to my meals. I can do 2 TBSP to 1/4 cup of them sometimes. Fruit I eat very occasionally, so far only berries. I haven't had any raw veggies yet at all and I've had no grains/potatoes, etc. I have had chili once, but I know some folks eat legumes pretty commonly.

My plan was definitely high protein, low carb, low fat after surgery. I followed it strictly for the first 5.5 months. I decided I needed more fat in my diet, and switched to a ketogenic diet, which is high fat, medium protein, and low carb. I make sure I get at least 60g of protein every day. I also have Type 2 diabetes (under control now, but never cured), so I keep the carbs low on purpose. I don't eat fruit because it all has so many natural sugars and, therefore, high carbs. The occasional berries, and once in a while an apple if I'm craving one.

Mostly I stick with veggies that are very low carb--leafy greens, zucchini, cucumber, cauliflower, broccoli, celery, spinach, things like that.

EDITED TO ADD: Also, as a lifelong carb addict, I find eating low carb helps me avoid the triggers for carb addiction. I've also found that the one time I was going to eat a hamburger with the bun because of an order error, after about 1/4 of the bun, I realized all I could taste was the bun, and that I now prefer the burger wrapped in lettuce! Eating low carb, for me, has been the best choice ever!

Thanks for all the replies. Do you all get enough fibers from the high protein diet? Or do you take some fiber supplements like metamucil? Cheers.

I am at 800 cals/day, so my fiber needs are at about 10g/day. I add 15g of Fiber One cereal to my yogurt every morning for breakfast. That gives me 7g of fiber. Then I usually get another 2-5 grams of fiber in the other things I eat during the day.

I eat veggies basically every day, unless I am lazy and haven't been to the store.

I don't have room for veggies with my protein, so I eat them as my afternoon snack and/or post dinner snack.

I have never been a big fruit eater, even before surgery. I would love to have a few fresh strawberries once or twice a week when they are in season but since you can't buy them buy the pound and you have to get a whole container, it doesn't seem like strawberries are in my future. It would be a total waste as a single person to buy them when I literally want 2.

I do not take fiber supplements at all. The worst thing I did post-op was take Metamucil and I was miserable for days.

I have no bathroom issues, my daily spinach or broccoli works fine.

I add vegetables to a lot of my meals (like casseroles or whatever) because the idea of not eating fruits or vegetables is very unhealthy to me. I do not do low carb either because the one time I tried going low carb, I felt my thought processes started to go back to how I was when my eating disorder was out of control (aka I was becoming obsessive and anxious). My surgical team did not and does not recommend going low carb.

Before my surgery, I focused on eating a balanced meal of protein, fruits or veggies and grains. I didn't have a caloric limit before surgery and I don't follow one after either, but I aim for keeping it around 800. If I go over that I don't make a big deal about it.
