constipation Help!

Hello everyone!

So I had my surgery on the 18th. I'm on a liquid diet for two weeks drinking miso soup, water, and boxed juice. After that I'm allowed protein shakes. Anyway, my last number 2 was on the day of surgery. I didn't go again for 10 days. I had a little case of running number 2 on Sunday. I'm afraid my constipation will happen again. Any advice on how to help it along?

I personally can't take most of the medications suggestions on the forum because I live in Japan and they don't have the same medications here. I got my surgery done here.

Thanks for your help and time.

First, ask your surgeon's office. They should be able to tell you what they prefer you use. Also, you might try sending a private message to a member called Biginjapan. She had VSG earlier this year and lives in Japan. She might be able to give you specifics on Japanese products available. Last, make sure you're getting all your liquids/water and then some.

I definitely recommend asking your surgeon for a suggestion here.

I've been using psyllium husks since December, which have been helpful, but the real bombshell has been adding two spoons of flax seeds to my morning protein shake. It's like magic.

Flax seeds work for me but I would not use them until you are fully back to regular foods. They could get into your staple line. Ask your doctor. I used milk of magnesia and many people use Miralax. Walking also helps move things along.

If you have only had clear liquids, then there should be nothing solid to be solid waste. If you are peeing then you should be eliminated any waste products from what you eat.

Thank you all for your advice. I will definitely contact my clinic and see what they have to day. I am drinking a lot of water already. Almost 2 liters so I don't think it's that. But I'll try some of the suggestions here. THANKS SO MUCH again everyone!

2 liters is about 67 ounces which is really on the low end of what we should be drinking post-op. Try to work on getting it up to 3 liters.

I am suffering too! At least here I have access to most of the things that people have suggested...but so far no results. Drinking a little coffee now, which I haven't had in months but hoping it may help because other stuff hasn't! More Miralax later, and may run to the store for prune juice. I empathize with you, let me know if you have found any great solutions. I am very eager for treating a bathroom trip as a non event.

Are you still taking narcotic pain killers? They constipate me after only a dose or two. Also, make sure you're plenty hydrated and getting your minimum amount of fluids your body needs. I know you don't feel like drinking that much, but it does keep things moving, among other benefits.
