Couple of questions

i am almost 2 weeks post-op. Has anyone had the following?

i wake up in the night and my mouth is dry. Not a little dry, but Sahara dry. I am not dehydrated and I make sure to drink before bed to prevent this from happening, but wake up several times and same problem. I sip some water, go back to sleep, and wake up again, mouth dead dry, every single night.

i have a sharp pain under my right side ribs. Hurts like the dickens when I roll over or press on it, or sleep on my side as I usually do. Just standing around I am fine. But it wakes me up at night. It is not getting worse but not better, and began two days ago. Before that I had no issue.

i so appreciate all the wealth of info the veterans here have, so thought I would ask.

Dry mouth can be a side effect of many different medications. I recommend asking your doctor or checking side effect lists of your meds online to see if any of yours could be responsible. (Otherwise, call your doctor.)

The pain sounds like normal healing to me - nerves reattaching, sensation coming back, etc. HOWEVER, if it gets worse; is red, hot, etc.; or even just if it worries you - CALL YOUR SURGEON and ask. Better safe than sorry and this is part of what you're paying them for. :)

The only med I am on that is new is oemprazole. It could be a culprit.

I didn't have the dry mouth issues, but I did have the pain under my ribs on the right side starting about a month after surgery. After reporting it to my surgeon, he said it could be gallstones / gallbladder inflammation. He put me on ursodiol and I haven't had any issues since.

I had dry mouth in the beginning and slept with a water bottle next to my bed and would sip on it during the night too. I think it's normal in the beginning. I was unable to sleep on my side for several weeks following my vsg. I had to prop up on pillows and sleep on my back with another pillow under my knees. These were just temporary issues for me.

I had serious dry mouth for a few weeks after surgery. I got some special dry-mouth toothpaste and mouthwash, the brand is Biotene and I got it at Walgreen's. It helped a TON!

I can't remember how far out you are. But, I had terrible dry mouth for weeks after surgery. WEEKS. I think it was probably 8 weeks in when I finally realized that it was gone. I think it had something to do with healing from surgery and just the fact that you require so much water during that time frame. I was drinking and doing all the things I should, but the nights were the worse. I developed a bit of an addiction to sugar free breathe mints during that time

I deeply thank all of you for responding. It is so encouraging to have the support of people who have been through this. I have support from my husband but... he doesn't have any personal experience. So this forum helps me so much.

Thanks all. Reassuring that the dry mouth thing will disappear and tomorrow I'm going to CVS to look for the mouth spray for the meantime.

Yep, like Erin, I had terrible dry mouth for ages after surgery. I still get it now and then, but not as bad. Always keep something to drink by the bed just in case.
