What are some essential nutrition do's and dont's after VSG? I am having surgery this summer and am worried about throwing up and possible hair loss.

You will probably not throw up unless you eat too much or too fast.

Losing hair is very likely from months three through nine.

It grows back.

These things can honestly vary from person to person. I have a coworker who had VSG a while before I did and she threw up for a few weeks after surgery and had slightly noticeable hair loss. I had surgery 9/28/15 and have never thrown up at all and had no hair loss. The biggest thing in my opinion is to do whatever you can to get your protein in and vitamins as soon as your cleared for them. Also make sure you don't waste stomach room on nonessentials. So like don't eat or drink things that are not nutritionally needed.

Lost 161 lbs since surgery, LOST 221 lbs overall so far!!

DO:

  • Eat lots of protein, 60+ g per day
  • Stick to lean, dense protein like chicken, lean beef, and fish
  • Weigh, measure, and log your portions to make sure you're eating what you think you are

DON'T:

  • Eat many carbs, most people stick to under 25g while losing
  • Drink liquid calories, particularly alcohol

If you need a guide to post-op nutrition, I think the book Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies has a really good overview, I highly recommend finding a copy.

I've only thrown up post-op when I ate salmon that was too dry and from the things that people normally throw up from - like food poisoning, extreme pain, etc.

As for hair loss, google telogen effluvium. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't, you can't prevent it or make it stop faster if you're one of the "lucky" ones.

For a more detailed eating plan - your surgeon should fill you in.

Sparklekitty covered pretty much everything! Also, your surgeon will have a dietitian to guide you through this.
