Day 5 and getting everything in...

I had my VSG surgery on Tuesday. Today is day 5 for me, and I was able to get in all of my protein (60 grams) and water (64 oz.) I know I should be happy that I was able to follow the doctor's instructions, but I keep reading posts from people who are struggling to get in half of their requirements. Should I be worried that I am not feeling any resistance when drinking. I did get full with 2 oz. of broth, and it took me about 40 minutes to finish one 11 oz. Premier Protein drink. I also had a large paraesophageal hiatal hernia repaired during my surgery. I thought because of that I would be more likely to struggle to get all of my liquids in. Is this okay at this point in recovery? Thanks in advance!

Hello, I am a new subby to this forum. I had vsg on 3/30/17. I am post op day 3 and I have not been able to get in my liquids and protein down. I think it's because I am scared of pain more than anything. I will be trying harder tommorrow to get down everything I am required. Thanks for sharing.

Set a timer so that you'll remember to take a sip every 15 minutes :)

I wouldn't be discouraged - sounds like you are following doctor's orders and things are going well! Be encouraged and keep up the good work!

Many people have no problems getting in their protein and water right after surgery. Since it all essentially goes right through your stomach, there's not a thing wrong with that...be happy! You are not one of the many who struggled right after surgery. I got mine in by sipping constantly all day long. 40 mins for 11 oz sounds really good, you're actually doing great.

What you need to keep in mind is that when you actually start eating food again, it may get harder for you (not necessarily, just maybe), so enjoy the fact that you are doing so well so soon after surgery! Kudos to you!

Thank you so much. I figured I was probably being overly cautious, but everything is so new at this point. I am trying so hard to follow my doctor's orders to have the best possible outcome. I am probably overthinking everything! Your reply is very reassuring.

It's totally normal and fine to not feel any restriction with liquids - they go right through your stomach, so it's anatomically fine.

I never had a problem with liquids post-op. We should consider ourselves lucky :D

That early I would only worry about staying hydrated. Give your stomach time to heal and not be swollen... you will get there eventually.

Everyone's different... I, like you, had no problem at 5 days post op. However my girlfriend (who had VSG surgery 10 days before I did) really struggled.

Thanks everyone. I feel much better hearing your input. I guess I should celebrate that it is going well so far!
