Diet questions from a newbie

Hello my friends!

I recently had my surgery on 2-16-17 and have a follow up with my surgeon on 3-13-17.  I'm feeling pretty good but I'm unsure of my diet all the time.  60-80 grams of protein and less than 400 calories per day.  Does that sound about right?  I am trying to have soup or something throughout the day but the protein drinks alone are almost 400 calories.

Am I doing this right??

It depends on what food "stage" you are in.  if you are on liquids, then getting your protein from mostly drinks sounds good.  Two weeks at 400 cal and 60 to 80 grams of protein sounds good to me.  I don't think I was eating much more myself.  Keep up the great work!!!

**I just went back to MyPlate (livestrong now) and looked at what I was eating 12 days after my surgery - 472 cals and 78 protein.

You're doing great!

Thanks Rachel,

It's nice to have a little reassurance.  I am in the full liquids stage still.  I want some warm soup but I can't seem to work the calorie/protein situation out.

Thanks for the input!

I'm no expert by any stretch, but 400 seems really low. Is that what your doctor told you to aim for? I'm on protein shakes and liquids for 3 weeks and my surgeon said 600-800 calories a day, 60-80g protein, and 100% of the RDA for vitamins.

I just looked at my paperwork and it says 300-600 in the first couple months post surgery.  Thanks for the input! I'm happy I get to have some soup!

You're a week further along than I am, but I totally get wanting warm and savory soup. Any sweet tooth I had before this is being destroyed shake by shake, jello by jello, popsicle by popsicle, and crystal light by crystal light! Blech.

Love that stuff!!! That was my savior the first couple of weeks after surgery. I still drink it!

I think everyone is different.  It was almost four months before I was getting consistently greater than 500 calories per day.  But my protein was 70+.  I didn't hit 700's until well into my fifth month.  My sleeve was done to a 32 f, which is one of the smallest sizes used by surgeons.  I don't know if any of that made a difference.  But I also didn't have any complications of malnutrition or hair loss, or anything else like that.  I think it's just all down to what the surgeon recommends.

Makes sense. My surgeon took into account my 6' height and larger frame and said he was going to make my sleeve bigger than he would for a smaller woman.
