GERD/Acid Reflux - Reality vs Imagination
About 30 mins after eating a very light lunch, I began to experience the tell tale signs I have come to learn in the last few weeks. My body quickly over heated and my breathing became shallow. My new tortured tummy was swimming in acid and I am burning along with it. All I can do is step away from my key board and breath deeply.
I simply did not understand the reality of this risk. I thought I would have the occasional reflux of my past life and may need to take a zantac here and there and as my prolific surgeon said, "it will go away in a few months". I thought everyone who suffered long term already had it....nah now I know it's all bs. Anyone even my arogant ass shall be on that boat.
Funny fact, my surgeon told me I had a very large thick stomach (rip). So my body must be thinking damn girl, where you at?????? All this acid be missing you and all your thickness, this new skinny ***** is not doing it for us! Shoo, let's go check on those lungs and esophagus!
Less warm now, I somehow rationalized drinking cold water will help. But rather have my large thick stomach back.
Oh and before you ask I am on 40mg of panatoloc :)
I had major heartburn issues before surgery but it's so much better since losing weight. I take off brand omeprazole once a day and it works for me. Maybe try a different med? Also, there are foods and beverages that make it worse. Do you drink coffee? You probably need to avoid food that trigger it.

You're fresh out of surgery. Your stomach will continue to produce the same amount of acid as it did before surgery for awhile. My surgeon had all of his patients on a daily pepcid for the first 3 months. And, if you take an acid reducer or PPI, you have to wean yourself off of it. If you go cold turkey, acid production kicks into high gear.

Your doctor said this could go away in "a few months."
It hasn't BEEN "a few months" since surgery yet.
Why not see if he proves right before suggesting he's full of it?

VSG 2013, RNY conversion 2019 due to GERD. Trendweight here!
With GERD being a known side effect of VSG, who are these surgeons who are doing this surgery on people who have it prior to surgery?
Am I the only person who finds this negligent?
Noone should be on PPIs forever as they come with their own long term effects

I'm sure a few are negligent -- not driving home the reality of gerd after VSG.
But we see far, far too many who tell us they had gerd before getting sleeved, their doctors tell them they should have RNY, all of us tell them they would be better off with RNY, and they insist on VSG anyway. It's just insane to me.
