Hi all! I am almost 5 weeks post op and I am doing great.  I am down 36 pounds :)

I have a very hard time drinking protein shakes.  Even before surgery I could not stand them.  I eat a lot of Greek yogurt and string cheese to make up for my lack of protein shakes.  Anyone else do that? get their protein from foods instead of shakes?

I am asking because it seems like everyone drink protein shakes

Many people get protein from food only. Just be careful to track your intake to know your getting in enough. Something that helped me was Kroger Carb Smart milk. It was high protein lower carb milk in chocolate. I could drink that when I couldn't stand the protein shakes for a while after surgery.

If you need more protein you can add unflavored protein to your Greek yogurt or really any food you can mix with (i.e. cottage cheese, anything pureed if you're still on mushy's, etc.)   One of my favorite snacks is 1/2 c. vanilla Light-n-Fit Greek yogurt, 1/2 scoop of unflavored (or vanilla) protein powder, and 1 1/2 T. PB2 - 194 calories, 24.8 g. protein.  Tastes like peanutbutter pudding.

I have worked hard at getting away from bars, shakes, etc.  The sugar alcohols have no mercy on my delicate system, so I keep them around for emergencies only.

I started making my own beef jerky.  I eat a lot of nuts.  Chicken, turkey, ham, pork, tuna, etc, are all excellent choices for high protein foods.  Cheese and other dairy products are also good if you can tolerate them, as well as eggs.  So are beans, and they have lots of fiber to counteract that protein.  I generally have no trouble hitting my protein goal of 100 plus grams a day.

There are many people here who have never had a protein shake a day in their life - it can be done :)  Make sure you're getting your protein in and not exceeding your caloric intake and it's all good.

I can't stand shakes! I only used them during the first few weeks post-op. Once I discovered Greek yogurt, I never looked back :)

Blended soups. All I could do after surgery in the liquid phase as protein shakes made me nauseous. Lentil soup, Bean and Bacon soup, beef vegetable soup, split pea soup, etc. and I added some unflavored protein to each half cup. I survived and thrived on these soups getting up to 100g protein in a day.

Lentil soup, do you have to strain it?

Nope. Just put it all in the blender/Ninja/whatever you have and blend it all smooth. Early on, I had to add some water to thin it, but didn't have to do that for very long. I would also add Benefiber to it to up the fiber because my body NEEDS the fiber! :)
