I had occasional acid reflux prior to surgery and was taking omeprazole fairly regularly before my surgery. I started getting super bad quadricep and foot cramps so went off a month or two before sugery. When I went home from the hospital my doctor prescribed omeprazole again.  I took it, as prescribed for a month, then every other day for 2 weeks, as prescribed. I was fine so they took me off.

Prilosec is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) which inhibits stomach acid production so it might help healing even if you don't need a PPI long term. Don't be surprised if you do need it in the future though. It can be a VSG side effect - it was for me.
