Post WLS Blood Work?

The PA from my surgeon's office mailed me lab orders to have some blood work done before my 6-month appointment in April. She only ordered Vitamin B-12 and a lipid profile.

I know I have to call her back, because there are no thyroid tests on there, and the surgeon specifically said he wanted to check my levels.

I'm looking for my notes from the education sessions that list the potential tests they might request, because I know there were about four items on that list that are specifically related to my health issues.

While I realize that everyone's situation and care plan is different, I'd like to ask what tests y'all get, or recommend, so that when I call her back, I can ask good questions.  (I've also read several articles re: same).

Thanks for any input/suggestions you may have.

My PCP monitors my thyroid.  My weight loss surgeon has never ordered those tests.

Everyone's different.  My surgeon orders blood tests related to VSG.  These were ordered @ my 3 mo. (ready???):  eGFR, EGFRAA, vitamin D, B, B-12, B-1, A, B-6, Retinyl Pulminate, TIBC blood, intact PTH, folate serum, ferratin, urea Nitrogen blood, sodium blood, protein total blood, glucose, creatinine, chloride, carbon dioxide, calcium blood, bilirubin, AST, ALT, alkaline phosphate, albumin, WBD, RBWSD, RBC, platelet count, PCV blood, nucleated RBC, MCV, MCHC, MCH and hemoglobin blood.  Whew .... not sure what they all mean. (my intact PTH is closely monitored because of possible parathyroid tumor - not sure if this is a customary test)

* I had no co-morbidities except sleep apnea.

Actually, the most of those are in two blood tests: CBC (complete blood count:albumin, WBD, RBWSD, RBC, platelet count, PCV blood, nucleated RBC, MCV, MCHC, MCH and hemoglobin blood) and CMP (complete Metabolic panel:urea Nitrogen blood, sodium blood, protein total blood, glucose, creatinine, chloride, carbon dioxide, calcium blood, bilirubin, AST, ALT, alkaline phosphate)

Hello,

I got my 6 month lab orders too and this is what they include:

  1. CBC
  2. Comprehensive Chemistry
  3. Serum Iron
  4. B12 Level
  5. Lipid Panel
  6. PTH
  7. Vitamin D 25 Hydroxy

PS: I had no comorbities before surgery I am not sure if the tests ordered have anything to do with pre-existing comorbidities.

These are basically to monitor normal levels.  They want to make sure nothing gets too outta whack.  Monitor for anemia, cholesterol.  Vitamin d deficiency (which most of us have anyway) will cause or exacerbate depression.  I can't think of PTH off the top of my head...  But it's only for most normal stuff.

PTH is, I believe, for parathyroid.

PTH is parathyroid hormone, and it's used because it's more accurate to test for calcium deficiency.  I actually haven't seen it often for sleevers; usually it's more important for RNY and mandatory for DS.

I follow a ketogenic diet post-op. I also have a diagnosis of binge eating disorder. Feel free to ask me about either!

Every 3-6 months I have a complex thyroid panel done (Hashimoto's) depending on if my labs were good.

For WLS my 6 month labs are CBC, CMP, and vites D, B1, B12 (I am often deficient in these).

My yearly labs are lipids, A1C, the rest of the vitamins.  My A1C was 4.8 a few months ago, so hopefully I won't need it any more.

I follow a ketogenic diet post-op. I also have a diagnosis of binge eating disorder. Feel free to ask me about either!
