Is this normal liquid intake for a few days out?

Hi all,

I'm just looking for some reassurance here.  Had surgery on the 1st. I am struggling with getting in liquid and protein. My program goal is 64oz fluid and 70-90 protein.

I have a few hours left of the day and have managed 32 oz fluid with 40 protein.  I'm very concerned about dehydration. Did most of you start out the same for the first week?  I know it will get better, however, I'm trying to guage what's the norm.

Thanks in advance,

Rachel

I'm almost 2 weeks out and still can't get my protein in. The shakes are the hardest. If I mix them with skim milk I do a little better. Good luck to you, I keep reading this support group and hoping for suggestions.

Not enough liquid and you may be heading for dehydration and a hospital visit.  Keep water with you and sip almost constantly.

Yes, focus on fluids first, protein second.  You have to get your fluids in--you can work your way up with your protein.  Also remember your protein drinks count as fluids as well.

I had zero issues making either goal as soon as I was home after surgery.  I just sipped all day.

You absolutely need more fluid. Sugar free popsicles, jello, ice chips, broth, whatever you have to do. You NEED more to heal, and burn fat. You will feel extra crappy until you do.

I also had a hard time getting in all my water. I still don't think I have actually drank 64oz of water in one day. The first week I was drinking so little that I really did worry I would be dehydrated (like 1 glass a day). Eventually I figured out I just don't like water very much, so I added some flavor to it with Crystal Light Peach Tea flavor, and now I can drink a lot more than I used to. I still don't think I get enough, but it definitely got easier as time went on.

For me, the hardest part was not drinking with my meals. I was used to taking a bite, then taking a sip. I thought the bite-sip habit was going to be impossible to break, but it wasn't nearly as hard as I thought it would be.

Find a drink you actually like the taste of. That will make things easier. It was hard for me to give up my Doctor Pepper 10, and not drinking coffee for 3 months was hell, but you get though it.

I'm still pre-op.

My NUT recommended I use Fat Free FairLife Milk for all my protein shakes because the protein is high.  It is also Lactose Free, so no tummy issues.
