I knew that topic would get folks attention. So, no, I'm not wondering when I can go back to drinking alcohol!!  What I am wondering is if I can cook with it.  I have lots of sauce recipes that use it as a flavoring agent and wondering when it is safe to cook with. I'm almost 5 weeks out of surgery. TIA.

When you cook with wine or other alcoholic beverages, the cooking usually burns off the alcohol and just leaves the flavor, so I can't imagine it would be a problem.  I just wouldn't use it in recipes where it is uncooked.

However, I'm still new to this so you might pay closer attention to what the vets have to say

How much alcohol burns off is contingent on the cooking method......

So the thing about alcohol burning off during cooking is a really super persistent myth.  It doesn't.

That said, I've cooked with alcohol since I started purees after liquids and I've never had an issue.  I doubt it's impeded my loss and it hasn't inspired me to pick up a drinking habit.

Well, there ya go!  I used to drink the occasional glass of wine or mixed drink, but never cooked with alcohol.  I don't like the way it tastes in my food.   I knew the vets would have the right answer!

It did not take long to find this.  It took longer to edit my post, trying to get the software here to make it work right.

I was pleasantly surprised when it came up as a bariatric related article myself.

As others said, a significant percentage of the alcohol can remain after cooking. So it really depends on how much you use, and how much alcohol is in it to begin with. And, you aren't eating very much of that, either.

The biggest issue I have with ALL toppings is the calories, and that it opens the door to more. We start off putting a measured teaspoon of low calorie sauce on something, and three years after surgery we're back to putting high calorie crap on, with a ladle. It's a slippery slope.
