BMI Goal Unrealistic? How long will weight loss continue?

Lots of great advice above. I have never seen a surgeon suggest a goal that was too low or completely unattainable. They are always at least a little high. I have seen some set goal weights for patients that had them still well into the obese range. I'm currently at almost 60 pounds below my surgeon's goal.

If you work hard enough, you can do it.

Oh yes, completely realistic. The only reason it might not be is if you were a body builder type so all that extra muscle doesn't fit nicely into the bmi chart. In some cases, for whatever reason, the bmi chart is not a good fit... but assuming it is then get to YOUR goal. It will be harder to stop the weight loss phase and then restart it later (been there, done that).

I'm wondering myself about setting an appropriate goal weight.  I'm already below what the surgeon said I would achieve with the sleeve.

Have you tried getting one of those of those dexa scan tests? It might give you a better idea of where you're really at since it measures the amount of fat, muscle etc you have in your body. Then maybe you can set a more realistic goal for yourself that isn't so dependent on surgeons goals(which could run on the high side) or bmi charts.

I'm still losing at 18 months and I am eating anywhere between 1500-2000 calories a day and still losing because of the types of foods I eat. If you are already at 28 BMI, I think 24 is very easy to do if you choose to.

I was told by the dietitian in my surgeon's office that very few of their super morbidly obese patients make it to normal weight - that most end up "overweight" or "class I obese".  I'd read articles that confirm that - that about 10% of us formerly SMO folks make it to a normal BMI.  Yet - here I am.  And there are a lot of us here on OH.  It takes a lot of hard work and dedication, but it IS possible....clearly.
