I am up way too early for a Saturday!  But I am planning on going to SkyFit which is the fitness class at the new local trampoline park.  I'm SUPER excited.  I tried to do it on 12/17, but we had an ice storm and I didn't feel safe driving.  Of course, it snowed again for today, but it seems like just a dusting and, unlike 12/17, there aren't warning all over the place from the State and Highway Admin warning people to stay off the roads. So I'm going.  Wooo!  I've never done this before, so I'm super excited.

1: protein shake
2: leftover bacon wrapped chicken breast from last night
3: one-pan paprika chicken with potatoes and tomatoes

liquid and vites: on track
exercise: bouncing!

How about you?

Good morning all,

Its snowing in New England, so I'm planning a quiet day working at my computer, studying my Spanish and perhaps watching some old movies for fun.

It should be a good diet day.

Breakfast - salmon

lunch - egg roll bowl

dinner -  orange chicken with spinach

Have a good day, everyone.

That sounds like a lovely sort of day!  What are you using to study Spanish?  I was using Duolingo for Norwegian for a while, but then got distracted.  I need to get back to it!

Hi Gwen,

My hubby and I traveled to Norway some years ago and really enjoyed it.  The people were so warm and friendly.  Its great that you are learning Norwegian.

I stared my Spanish studies with a teaching company class  by William Worden which is a first semester college class on Spanish in 30 lessons with oral exercises and a workbook.  As well and the language lessons, he incudes meta information on ways to help acquire new languages.  It was excellent.  I really liked it.

They do not have a second level class yet, so I had to move on to other materials.  I listen to Spanish news reports to get the sound of the language. I watch movies I like that are dubbed in Spanish, with Spanish sub-titles. I found a site at the university of Texas that has short talks by Spanish-speakers from various countries.  They were helpful for oral comprehension and getting a sense of different accents.

Then I found some workbooks in a series called "Practice makes perfect."  It presents grammar topics in small segments with lots of practice in each lesson.  There is also lots of translations of paragraphs that allow one to build vocabulary and skills with multiple opportunities to practice each skill.  I particularly like the ones on Verbs and prepositions.

I also like www.spanishdict.com.  It has detailed definitions of words, so you can get a sense of the variety of ways the words are used. They also have a set of grammar lessons on line for free, and they include a quiz section to practice the skills.  I really like this one because you get immediate feedback, and it reminds you of the rule every time you give a wrong answer.

I'm also reading the first Harry Potter book in Spanish, using the English copy to help with translation.  This is slow-going, but I think it is building my vocabulary.  I make lists of words I want to learn, and study them, as well.

I know I'm using my Spanish studies as a diversion from some of the stresses in my life, but I think that's ok for now.  At least its more positive outcome - as opposed to drugs, or drinking or over-eating, or many of the other ways we might manage our stresses.

I'm scared of putting myself in an immersion situation in going to Spain to study.  But I'm pleased that I have the courage to give it a try.  We'll see how it goes.

Best wishes,

Carol

My partner is Norwegian, so I have extra incentive to learn - but so far I'm keeping it a secret from him, which is one of the reasons it can be challenging to find time to work on it!  I agree that Norway is amazing.  I'm hoping to get back some day for a visit, but this year his parents are coming to visit us.  Maybe next year we'll be able to get over there.

You are super inspirational with your Spanish work!  I love that you're doing such a variety of techniques.  What a great plan!  Your immersion training will be transformative, I'm sure.
