Water retention?

Did anybody else gain weight during their hospital stay? I'm 10lbs heavier since getting back home, and I'm assuming I'm retaining water. Is this normal?

I put some weight on...it's all that fluid they pump into you.  For me, it was Dextrose solutions so sugar sugar sugar.  But drinking like instructed and sticking strictly to my liquid diet guidelines, it came off in a short while.

I haven't weighed myself yet, but the physicians' assistants both told me not to worry, that I would weigh more than when I went in due to the fluids I was given.

My nurse weighed me right before surgery.  As soon as I got out of bed after surgery she had me walk to the scale.  Ir was up 19 pounds.

I asked the surgeon why I gained 19 pounds.  He laughed and told me I would pee it out.  It took about a week.

Most people do, yes.  It's advised to wait a week or two to weigh yourself post-op :)

Yup! It's the IV fluids combined with the body needing fluids to heal. I gained just over 12 pounds. I peed it out over the first week and was down those 12 plus and an extra 5 by the week after surgery.

yup, you don't eat before the surgery and don't drink after a certain time. Then they flood you with iv fluids. It will go away, not to worry. I think I gained weight but don't remember exactly what. But I did lose 120 lbs in the long run.   GL  Diane S

Be happy that you're overloaded on IV liquids. They will hold you over until you can drink enough liquids to sustain yourself.
