Newbie/Pre-Surgery Diet
Hello all! I have been looking at this forum for the past two months and joined today because I FINALLY have a surgery date! It's 12/01/2016. I'm a bundle full of mixed emotions, however, mostly grateful and looking forward to embarking on this new journey. My doc did not put me on a pre-surgery diet. Any tips on what you did pre-surgery to shed a few more pounds? Or tips on what I should bring to the hospital with me the day of. Thank you all for your time and help!
Congratulations on your upcoming surgery!?

Thanks :) I haven't explored the site enough to see the additional articles provided. I enjoy reading everything I can get my hands on to be as educated as possible going into this. Thank you again.
Hi, MJ! Congrats on your upcoming surgery. I'm scheduled just a few short days before you. Here's what the surgeon told me:
4 oz protein (aka meat) at every meal, at least four servings of fruits and four servings of veggies a day, lots of water
Now...what I've been doing...I cut back on everything, totally cut out the sugar and carbonation and very little carb intake. A day of meals for me looks like what most people would eat post-RNY, so I'm setting myself up for success.
So basically, high protein, low carb. I don't have a special pre-op diet that the surgeon ordered. He only required one day of clear liquids before surgery.
Good luck to you!

I appreciate you sharing. From what I have gathered, most people are doing a low-carb and/or liquid diet 2 weeks prior to surgery. I was surprised my surgeon did not require this. I'm hoping to shed at least 10 lbs before surgery. Good luck to you as well.
I think it really depends on the program. My BMI is 35 and my surgeon requires a three week liquid diet.

I don't know about your doc, but I wasn't allowed to have caffeine after surgery. I decided to come off it before I had my vsg. I had a terrible headache for 3 days, even though I was down to only one cup then. I was appartantly a little grumpy too... As hubby took the kids and ran away from me! And said stay away from her, just stay away if you want to live!
I didn't want to have to deal with withdrawals AND surgery pain at the same time. 2.5 years out and I still remember how rough caffeine was on me. I only drink decaf now (which only has a little).
Good luck!
Thank you for the feedback! I've stopped all carbinated drinks but I'm stuck on Arizona's diet green tea. I know that it has caffiene but I love it because it comes in a can without carbination. Tricks my mind into thinking I'm grabbing a diet pepsi. That was hard for me to stop (diet soda)but doable nontheless.
Congrats MJ!!! I am so excited for you. I did a 2 week low-carb diet pre-surgery. I too was a bundle of emotions pre-surgery but I am sooooo grateful that I made this decision. I am 3 months post-op and have no regrets. You got this! Welcome to the Loser's Bench
