I am Type 2.  Morning of surgery, my glucose was at about 130.  First couple days in the hospital (after being pumped with the dextrose/saline solution) it bounced around between 140 and 200.  Last day in the hospital is was in the 110s.  I've measure twice since I've been home and have been 78 and 83.  I haven't had any of my Diabetes medication since Tuesday and was told not to restart it.  If I'm done with that crap I am super happy.

Side note, why do they pump diabetic patients with Dextrose?  ...and then use insulin to bring their glucose back down?

I'm guessing for the calories since we don't really eat anything the first day after surgery.

Im not sure why they give us the dextrose. The only time I ever had insulin was the two days after surgery, thanks to that stuff.

The first morning home my fasting glucose was in the 70s. I have been off all meds since. My A1Cs have been in the 4s ever since surgery.

Dextrose is often used when people may be dehydrated, and all surgery often results in some dehydration.  Not just diabetic patients get it.

I follow a ketogenic diet post-op. I also have a diagnosis of binge eating disorder. Feel free to ask me about either!

Patients (DM or not) get D5W (5% Dextrose in water) or more commonly D5 1/2 NS because they're isotonic solutions. D5 contains 170 calories in 1000mL, which is given over 8-10 hours. Your hyperglycemia was more likely caused by the stress of the surgery than the 5% dextrose.

Congrats on the NSV! It's a big one!
