Hi Jamie,

My doctor said to not obsess over protein as much as being very focused on water. Give yourself a chance to try things that may suit your palette and pouch. I could have scrambled eggs after hospital but most people have said that didn't suit their stomach or diet restrictions. Regardless, just slow and steady work your way up. Just my humble opinion

For the first 2 weeks post op my main goal was to NOT get dehydrated.  Both my doctor and nut advised me to focus on getting in my water first and then protein, since it is much easier to become dehydrated than protein deficient.  So, my goal at first was to drink 4oz of water every waking hour.  I drank 1-2 protein shakes each day early on because they took hours to get down, but with each day that passed I was able to do a little more and get a little better.

My advice would be to work towards getting in 48oz of water at minimum first by getting on a schedule.  In between, sip your shakes even if it's only a small bit at a time.

During this time I felt like I always had a cup in my hand, which got to be pretty annoying but being conscious of my liquid intake helped train my brain for later on.

Congratulations! My doctor had/has us on 1 scoop of protein powder (containing at least 20 grams of protein per scoop)  in 4 oz of skim plus milk 3 x's a day. It took me a few days to get it down quicker, but it took me about an hour each shake the first few days. It'll get easier. Protein helps you heal, try your best to get in as much as you can. Good Luck!

I'm 3 and a half weeks out from surgery. I didn't concentrate so much on protein as I did on getting liquids in. I did sip on a protein shake all day (Premier with 30g of protein) and I tried to eat some Greek yogurt, but got to where I could stomach much sweet stuff. Once I got to eat puréed foods, things got easier. Good luck to you!!

I was getting three shakes in per day. But this early, fluids are most important for you. The good news is, the shakes will count as fluid and protein. Double score!

stick to clear liquids only and if you can tolerate a couple small sips of protein shake good. I did it that way. Day 6 post op for me and still taking few small sips a day only. Don't want to stress my new stomach.
