Did they cover your procedure?

Did you have to do 3-6 month supervised diet?

How was the approval process?

Please let me know, I want to hear from you!

The best thing to do is call the Customer Service number on the back of your insurance card, because all BC/BS policies are not the same.  Plus, if you have the insurance through an employer, the employer may have excluded WLS from their policy.  Also be aware we're approaching the time for open enrollment so an employer can change their coverage shortly.  If they cover WLS now, they may not in January.

Best of luck.

Thats because the last surgeon I was working with- I did everything for, All pre-op classes, psyc eval, nutrition counseling etc... Set a date for my surgery after a longgg process and then called me a week beforehand and said he switched to a private practice and would no longer be in network with my insurance.. He really left me high and dry with very little options.

I have BCBS of New Jersey and I only had to have 2 nutritional consults, a psych eval, and an endoscopy. My surgeons office called and told me what I needed but you can call yourself.

Just call BCBS. I have BCBS of NJ and when I called to ask if it was covered, they told me everything and what portion would be my responsibility etc. It depends, every plan and every state is different. Fortunately for me, i didn't need "approval", it was a covered procedure, they just deferred to whatever the doctor's requirements were (2 Nutritional Classes, Psych Eval, EGD, Pulmonary Clearance and Cardiology Clearance). But those weren't the insurance's requirements, only my surgeon's.  Just call, they should be able to tell you everything right there on the spot.  :)

I have BCBS FL, but mine was excluded, at least the surgery part. That being the case, I was cash pay and bypassed pretty much all preop. They did cover the blood work, chest xrays, etc I had to do prior to surgery, and all labs post op.

My preop psych eval was covered 100%, too

Every insurance plan is different. Two people with BCBS may have completely different coverage and requirements, even if their plan has the same name. Others' experience may not match yours.

Snag a copy of your benefit book, or call the customer service number on the back of your card. They can give you information specific to your plan and coverage.
