Over it

Life is too short to be bitter, really.

Just respond back with "What a nice thing to say, thank you!" and then move on to another subject.

I agree that these comments are complimentary and are offered for encouragement and continued motivation.  Stop looking for the backhanded insult....like thinking they only pay attention now that you're not fat.  Trust me, they couldn't miss you before, but were being polite not to point out imperfections.  Just let it go.

I had a fitness class sub ask me, in front of the entire class, "how much weight have you lost?!  What are you doing??"  Ugh.  So inappropriate.

I have a script, though, and I stick to it.  Eventually people stop commenting because they know that I'm going to shut the conversation down.

While I agree that these comments are probably intended as compliments, that doesn't mean they're okay or appropriate!

They simply can't help it. You would probably react the same way if you hadn't seen someone in a few months and them BAM! they are half the size they were previously. People generally mean well but I understand you aren't used to that kind of attention. You just have to realize in your mind you are embarrassed and criticizing yourself for being so overweight before but these people have no clue what's going through your head. When I lost a ton of weight 10 years ago I had every man holding doors open for me. In my mind I was thinking I bet you wouldn't have done that for me a few months ago asshole!!!! LOL

I love it, but I've learned I'm an attention junkie. I especially liked the guy who said, when I told him I was Bill's wife, "No you aren't! She had brown hair and was much bigger!" It cracked me up. Or the guy who first asked my husband if I was feeling okay before he said how great I look because he wanted to make sure I wasn't sick and that's how I lost the weight. The ones I don't like is the couple of women who have said I'm a ***** or that they hate me.

I've gotten the "you aren't sick are you?" question too.  Again, I think they are well-meaning most of the time.  They probably save the "she's a *****" for when I'm not around (LOL).

I know what you mean.  I can understand it when I run into someone whom I haven't seen in months and months - but there's a woman who works down in our shipping room who points out my weight loss every freakin' time I see her - which is like two or three times a week.  I mean - come on!

I take it as compliments. When they want to know details about how much I weigh, I give it to them. Then I go into detail about healthy diets, exercise, etc.  So much detail that their eyes roll back into their head from boredom and they look for an escape. Then when they realize you have to put work into weight loss, they get don't want to know all the details.Usually they are so bored at that point, they never ask for details again.

I'm sorry. Sometimes people don't think before speaking.
