Can I safely take cough syrup with VSG?

I am one week into my first serious head cold since my surgery 2.5 yrs ago and have a cough/tickle that is waking me and keeping me from resting. I am gargling warm sal****er, taking lots of tea with honey and cinnamon and also taking my food with hot sauce but can't shake this. I need some sleep. Can I use cough syrup? Any recommendations? At this point I'm not even worried about sugar content I just need relief.

I can handle the rest of the symptoms and really try not to run to the Dr for a cold but this raw throat/tickle is dragging me down. Suggestions?

I'm not sure about the cough supressant/nasal decongestant, but for sure you'd need to avoid anything that is a pain/fever reducer -- those are NSAIDs more often than not.

You can safely take a cough suppressant after VSG.

Sure.  I do DayQuil/NyQuil for colds - they use tylenol so are safe.  I prefer capsules, but there's no reason you need to avoid the liquid unless you're allergic to something in them.

Hi Gwen,

I am also having a terrible cold. I am 8 weeks out. I know Nyquil has some alcohol in it. I am assuming it will just make me extra sleepy?

You can take cough syrup.  I use mucinex and sudafed, myself.

I follow a ketogenic diet post-op. I also have a diagnosis of binge eating disorder. Feel free to ask me about either!

Your doctor might agree to give you a codeine prescription...EXCELLENT cough suppresant.  I hope you feel better soon!
