The parrot vs. the toilet

Thank you all. I used to swear by the trusty prune, but it hasn't been working for me lately, and I don't want to increase the amount as the carb and calorie count would be too high.

I'll give all your suggestions a try, with the exception of the Squatty Potty. I live on a boat, and the bathroom (or as we salts like to call it, "the head") is too small to accommodate the Potty. But a strategically placed step-stool should help.

push and mush

You may need a laxative that provides push to get you get you caught up:  magnesium, senna, bisacodyl, exlax    It is ok to use these products occasionally but you don't want to get your bowels to used to them.

After that, regular use of stool softeners provide mush to keep you regular:  miralax (which ismy favorite), docusate.   These products are considered safe for daily use although labeling will always say to ask your doctor if you want to use indefinitely.  These products frequently take longer to kick in than laxatives

Fiber can also be used for mush but there are a few people out there where fiber supplements increase constipation.

If you want, you can combine a couple of products for a couple of days ---- either one from mush and push or two from mush.  I wouldn't take two push products on the same day.

Best of luck,

Shel

I use colace/stool softener, 2 pills first thing in the morning with 12 oz water. After that, about half hour later I have breakfast and that pushes everything thru very quickly.

I do every three days(because it totally rids me of any bowel inventory), working very well for me. Nearly as good as that wretched magnesium citrate the gastro made me use before the colonoscopy...

Good luck!

Miralax when I take it.  I have been making my own kefir for a while now. (It is easy) It helps me.  Natural probiotics. According to florida study 10 B/ml.  I drink 10 oz /day. I don't know if the store bought kind is effective or not.  I have never tried it. DW and I ferment our own vegies too.  Haven't done kombucha yet but want to.

I eat 2 prunes/day.  I limit the number because they are kind of high in calories and sugar but I found 2/day was the number needed to do the job and I wanted to stick with something natural.

Whatever you do, don't try the fiber pills.  I did that and they kept me bloated the entire time.  I told my doctor after the fact and he mentioned that because my stomach is so small, fiber was the wrong choice.  If you can stand lactose, I found that half glass of skim milk a night is helping me more than anything.

I was wondering whether fiber was a good choice or not. When I had the lap-band, my doctor warned me never to use fiber supplements, as they could swell inside the pouch and potentially rupture it. The sleeve is different from the lap-band in structure and operation, but it's still very small compared to a normal-sized stomach. I can believe that fiber supplements would cause distress. I can cross that option off my list. Thanks.

Fiber is what worked very well for me. Prior to drinking Kombucha about 35 grams or so kept things in a good way. I did not use a pill or supplement though, just from food.

I bought some unpasteurized kombucha two days ago (ginger flavor). Took one sip and nearly upchucked. The taste is just awful, to me at least. I don't doubt that it has very good stuff in it, but how do you get it past your mouth? Sorry, but YUK! Any way to make it more palatable?
