Mental Health and surgery

I think overall I take less psych meds.  Maybe because there is less of me.  The initial hormone dump was pretty bad on my head but other than that I see no real changes.

I wouldn't discount what the doctor says about RNY but I would want to know his reasons.  I am not a believer in just do it because the doctor said so. Research what is best for you.  You are going to have to live with it.

You are smart to be concerned about this.  I say this not to scare anyone, but to keep things real.  My husband had RNY in 2004 and he committed suicide in 2005.  His mental health steadily declined over that year.  We tried numerous medications but by the time we realized how far gone he was, it was too late.  This is up to you ultimately, but it sounds like you prefer the VSG and I know in your shoes, I'd choose the same.  Good luck!!

I take psych meds and have zero absorption issues with the sleeve.  The surgeon should be willing to explain why the RNY is a better choice.  I have had clients for counseling (I'm a therapist) who have the RNY and take psych meds with no issue.  Really, the best person to speak to beside your surgeon is a pharmacist, as well.  They will know the absorption rates.  I know my bariatric program has a pharmacist that consults with us pre-op about our meds.  Can't hurt to ask.

I follow a ketogenic diet post-op. I also have a diagnosis of binge eating disorder. Feel free to ask me about either!
