addicted to the scale!

I had surgery on 7-11-16 sleeve. I was 394 on June 24th, and 362 at surgery. I am just about a week away from one month and scale says 336. I seem to lose about 1 lb a day like clock work. I did have 2 days at week two where I didn't seem to lose, but I think I was just retaining a lot of water. I weigh myself at least 3 times a day! I am always heaviest and night and then amazingly I am down exactly 1 pound from the day before. I am telling myself to stop it, because I know at some point a real stall will happen, I hope I get under 300 first, but I need to focus on the non scale victories.

I can fit into lots of clothes I haven't been able to in years, My shorts don't fit, nor does my underware lol. I don't visit too many people that don't see me regularly so I get the wow comments from them when I tell them how much I have lost, but I wonder if they can see it. I can but honestly I can't see that much, 60lbs difference. How long did it take anyone else to leave the poor scale alone, we have become best friends! How long until you start seeing yourself really changed? I think I need to focus on the other benefits than appearance, I am off insulin, blood pressure and all prescription drugs already, and that means I am healthier, so I think I will put all my prescription drugs I don't take anymore right next to the scale, along with a growing pile of clothes I can no longer wear. Any other ideas?

The scale is an important tool and it is perfectly fine to weigh as often as you want.  Watching the weight fall off is fun and it would be a shame to deprive yourself of that pleasure.

My scale is my best friend and we visit daily, even if there are days when I dread what it is going to say.

Staying away from the scale and from being weighed is what got us big enough for surgery.  Enjoy your new addiction and keep it up for life.

I'm three years post op, maintaining at my goal weight, and I still weigh myself daily - or even twice a day.  It is an important part of maintenance for me, as I do tend to gain if I'm not diligent in watching my food intake.  My goal weight is 160, and when I hit 165, I go back into weight loss mode until I'm down below 162.  This happens several times a year.  I'm terrified of regain.

I didn't really feel smaller until I had lost over 100 pounds - but I was also a heavy-weight starting at 385 pounds.  My NP said it takes about 18 months for the brain to catch up with the body, but I'll tell you that I still do double-takes when I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror.  Its amazing to me how much smaller I am, and how I don't really feel any different.

Clearly, I have more energy and I am healthier and I can do more,  but inside it doesn't feel different.

Interesting.

Congratulations on your weight loss.

Carol

I'll share with you what was told to me when I was on WW sometime back...(2004-2006 I lost 115pds on WW)

I weighed daily.  Sometimes twice a day.  I was told as long as I don't let the scale defeat me, it was okay to do.  The moment I let the scale dictate my attitude towards my efforts, it was time to put it away.

One of the things that helped me detach from the scale was to use www.trendweight.com  It helps me to see trends and lets me treat the scale as just a data point instead of something that rules my life.

I did the trend weight and fitbit tracking help, but I would weigh once a week for the first what..... 6 months... After that, a couple of weeks for about 2-3 more months. Until eventually now I just keep an eye on about every month, if I remember. The important thing is to remember that weight is by no means the only indication that you are losing weight. Inches count just as much. ;)

I had surgery the same day as you and I decided before I even went under the knife that I would only weigh myself once a week.

I instead focus on eating right, getting exercise in and how I feel vs. what the scale says. That will probably change when I reach maintenance but for now I don't want the scale to be what I focus on.

Paul,

You are getting some good advice already and I only add that it's ok to track weight, blood sugar, blood pressure etc. daily, looking for WIDE variations.  But don't obsess over anything you spot unless it persists for a week.  Then you have a chance of adjusting.  I had my VSG same day as you and daily measurements bounce around.  Overall, averaging 1 pound per day.  Stay on a smart plan and you'll be fine.

I like how you said "you are friends with the scale".  I am friends with my blood sugar monitor which daily says I am doing well without insulin.  So we all need our "friends".

I enjoyed weighing myself often during the first month too, it was such a treat to see the weight falling off so quickly.  Now that I'm in my second month I weigh myself Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, this seems just right to me and gives me something to look forward to.
