First party since surgery
So, tomorrow I'm going to a retirement party. I thought it would be appetizers and drinks, but just found out it's a dinner buffet. I'm already nervous because I only know 2 or 3 people who will be there, but now there's the added element of 1. finding people to sit with for dinner and 2. getting through dinner without sparking questions about "why are you eating so little," and "don't you like the food?" Any suggestions on how to handle this?

Just explain that your Dr. has you on a very restricted diet right now and so you have to be careful not to over-indulge. I have to go in for some tests and so I have to be careful of what and how much I eat right now and don't want to mess it up. Mainly routine tests but until they are done I can only have certain high protein foods.
That should shut them up..... hahahahaha Hope this helps and good luck.
I've found that most people are busy eating and don't notice how much others are eating. If someone were to comment, I'd just say, "I'm not too hungry today." or "I'm pacing myself." Or something else non-committal. But I doubt anyone will notice.
best wishes,
Carol

People really don't pay much attention to, or care, about what or how much we eat. Make some wise choices, don't worry about it, and don't overthink it.

I agree with everyone here - people don't notice, and 1 thing I did was I picked up some meat balls and other things and slid them around my plate a lot while I took little bites. Also to speed things along about 1/2 through, I went to the ladies room and came back and they were clearing dishes, so it worked out great. So enjoy the party, you've got this.

You can't take care of them, if you don't take care of you!!

Thanks everyone! It's magnified because I'm aware of it, but not necessarily something others will notice, like you all said!
