Back to Work?

Hi! I am considering VSG surgery (hopefully) and I have a concern about how long I would have to take off from work, as I am the main breadwinner of my family. My job isn't too active, standing most of the day but not requiring any running around or excessive reaching or lifting or anything. Mostly just staring at a computer, I work in a bank.

How long before you were able to go back to work post surgery? As many opinions as possible would be great, thank you!!

Well, I'm just a few days post-op myself, so I don't know how helpful this is, but I'll tell you what I am doing.  I planned to take almost two weeks off work.  This had more to do with the post-op diet than how I would feel.  I will be on full liquids only through then.

I had surgery on Tuesday and feel like if I had to, I could probably return to work on Monday.  I'm off painkillers and getting my liquids.  I'm just really tired and have needed a lot of sleep. This seems to be improving now that I'm off the pain meds though.

Hi,  I just had VSG surgery on March 31 (Thursday) and felt good enough to go into work the next Wed.   I work at a desk all day at a computer.     I was still a little sore so I just walked a little more slowly when I did get up.

I was feeling human again by day 5 post op, and was back to work that day.  But I mostly work from home part time, so I was able to pace it to fit my needs.  A lot of people take two weeks off.  Some go back after a week.  It varies.

best  luck with your weight loss journey.

I took 2 weeks off but could have gone to work after a week if I had to.  However, I probably would have been exhausted by the end of the day and being able to figure out my puréed diet did take some time.  I have a desk job.

I could have gone back about a week out, but my surgeons office filled out my short term disability paperwork for 6 weeks... It was approved, and the rest is history haha...

Surgery was 3/3, and I'm going back to work this upcoming Monday...

I had surgery on Friday and was back at work a couple of days later on Monday. My job is mostly sitting at a desk or going to meetings. I had no discomfort at all. I also started the "full liquid" phase on the Monday I returned to work. I believe that helped with keeping my energy up.

Even with complications, I probably could have gone back to work at 2 weeks (I have a desk job).  I traveled to Boston from Atlanta at 3 weeks post op and Atlanta to Aruba at 5 weeks post op.

Hi,

I needed two weeks.  Went back to work the 3rd week and could only do half days b/c I was so tired.  The first week after surgery all I could do was sleep (like 16-18 hours a day), sip my protein, and walk a bit.

It also may depend on how old you are (I think if you're younger you bounce back easier -- I'm 45), how fit you are, how your surgery goes...those kinds of things.

I know it's scary to take that much time off work.  Keep in mind that it's a once-in-a-lifetime thing, and it's what you need to take care of yourself at this moment, right now.  Don't ru****

Good luck!!

I would take off as much time as the Dr. can give you. I was on short term disability for 4 weeks. and then my factory was down for another week, so 5 weeks in total for me, and still when I went back I was so tired. I go up and down big flights of stairs, but every day got easier. And now at a little over 4 months I have tons of energy. Projects around home that I have put off for years are getting done. Best wishes
