So, it's basically a waiting game at this point. I've got to get a bunch of testing done and get 3-6 months of documented diet (Dr or nutritionist). Biggest/hardest of all, I've got to get my A1C down to 7. Once I manage to do all of that, they will submit to insurance for approval

This is the first time I have read that you have to get your A1c level down to qualify. And I have been trolling on these boards for 5 plus years. I guess I am just surprised, as a major reason most of us go into this is to get healthy and reduce or eliminate the diabetic issue.

My husband is going through the process of getting approved for surgery as well and while he has accomplished all of the insurance requirements, he is still working on getting his A1C to a certain level, as his surgeon is asking.  It kind of surprised me too, as the surgery would really help him accomplish that :-\

High A1C indicates high blood sugars.  Like most of the time high. Sugar in blood can increae chances of infections and also slow down healing time... Winds have hard time to heal in people with uncontrolled BS.

I totally get that Hala, I do But so many of us go in diabetic. I also don't have a very good sense of how easy or hard it might be to reduce blood sugar down to that level. I know this past summer (or the one prior to that- can't remember) I worked very intentionally on lowering my A1c... I did, but by only a couple of tenths. It wasn't that high though, so perhaps if it had been up in the 7 or 8 range it would have dropped faster??  I don't know. I guess I am just surprised- seems like that is a pretty crummy hoop that might be difficult to reach, but I could be 100% off base on that. To the OP, good luck- you can change a remarkable amount in the preop phase if you stick to your plan consistently!

Would going low-carb in your diet help get the A1C level down?  I am a strong proponent of low carb diets, as they helped me immensely by reducing food cravings, and jump-starting the weight loss.

I had to complete a 3 month supervised diet before surgery, and my NP said she wouldn't schedule the surgery until I lost 50 pounds because they needed more room in my abdomen to be able to perform the laparoscopic surgery.  I lost the 50 pounds, and I am so glad I did.  The pre-surgery diet can be a great opportunity to get started on your weight loss.

Best of luck in your weight loss journey

I'm going to ask my Family Dr to be referred to a NUT who specializes in diabetics. I'm pretty bummed out, but am going to Fight! (I'm used to fighting... Lol).

thanks, Trish
