Does loss stop after 1 year?

Hello friends,

I'm 3 months out from VSG, and I'm no longer losing as quickly as I'd like, and fluctuating between 5 pounds for the last few weeks now. I called my NUT today and she said "hey, don't worry, it happens, you have a year to get the excess weight off". I had heard many people say that weight loss becomes almost impossible past the 1 year mark, and I'm concerned that I won't have lost all the weight I need to by then.

My question is...is the clock really ticking down on my tool? Does it become very difficult after the first year? If anyone out there is 1 year +, what are your experiences?

Thanks guys :)

I'm almost 5 years out and just recently lost 45 lbs and counting...the one year thing is total BS but it depends on your willingness to adjust your plan as you weigh less and don't need as many calories and also depends on your commitment/determination in losing weight.

Alison,

Thank you so much for your reply-- it's great to hear you were able to lose so much that far out-- congrats on that by the way! :)

weight loss slows over time, but it doesn't stop at one year.  If you keep the discipline and stick to your program you can continue to lose.  I didn't reach goal until 15 months post op, and since then I've chosen to lose weight after vacations and when I hit my upper limit.  It takes some determination to get back in the weight loss mind set, but I've always been able to do it,  You will too.

A couple of things- the first year you are the most motivated, so make it your job- mentally anyway. Even now I am always evaluating what I'm doing. Sometimes I need to change things up because I am in a food or exercise rut.

Second there will always be slower and faster times of losing....and plateaus. Doesn't mean you are doing anything 'wrong' per se.

I weigh myself everyday, but record it once a week. I also record once a month on my surgery date, and record on days of doc visits. We have bad memories, and this helps me see the trends and what is actually happening. Sometimes it is not as bad as I think.

Remember you are making life changes, not just on  a diet. This is a marathon, not a sprint.

Statistically that is true, however, the reason for it is people get fatigued of trying to lose the weight- not that the vsg stops working. I would strongly encourage you to weigh and track everything, exercise, get your protein in, etc.   Good luck!

I think happyteacher hit the nail on the head - the vsg doesn't change after a year - people just get tired of being so disciplined, there is no swelling, motivation may be waning.  Don't worry about it - focus on where you are now and try your best.

THANK YOU so much to the people that replied. I was so worried, and it's great to know that people have successfully lost past the 1 year mark. Really appreciate the time you took to comment!

Also people should realize that vsg, rny, the band, weigh****chers -  none of these have magical powers to make you lose weight or not - it's all you.  They are all just there to help you along the way.  Your stomach doesn't know when you've reduced it and it is one year later.  That being said, it does help alot :)
