Expierence eating this things after the sleeve?

Hi, I'm Erika and I'm only one week post op.

Right now it's very hard for me to stay focused because I'm still on a clear liquiid diet and craving everything!

I'm not planning on eating any of my cravings or anything but I'm curious about if I'll ever be able to eat some things. 

Not today or maybe not in 6 months but someday in the distant future?

I know it sounds crazy after the major thing I just did to myself but curiosity is killing me at the moment.

Congrats on your surgery! At the risk of sounding too permissive, I think the strictly honest answer is yes to all of those things. HOWEVER, and it's a huge however, you generally shouldn't eat that stuff, particularly on a regular basis. Losing the weight is one thing, but developing a lifestyle of eating the right things to keep it off is the real challenge.  I think the people who are successful long-term (from what I've read on this board) are the ones who make good choices.  This is not to say you won't be able to have a little bit of the something from the "naughty list" on occasion, but don't dream of making this part of your regular food plan.  Does that make sense?

For now, just dream of protein shakes and sugar-free pudding (and stick to your doctor's plan)! :)

You are apparently in that wonderful early post op phase when you can't eat anything and are obsessed with food. I remember that period. I loved watching cooking shows while I was recuperating! Go figure! I couldn't eat any of the high carb, high fat, high volume food I was watching being prepared, but for some reason it was very satisfying. It was also satisfying watching my partner eat things I couldn't! Living vicariously, I suppose. The whole immediate post surgery can be a real head trip. 

So, let me address your questions. First, spicy is good. You can eat spicy as soon as you can handle it. There is even evidence that spicy food can temporarily raise your metabolic rate. I went through a post op phase during which I ate HOT. I bought all sorts of mega hot sauce. It's toned down a bit, but I still love spicy food and eat it regularly. 

The foods you mention are all foods I have eaten since having my VSG, though I ate none of them during my first year post op, with the exception of the sushi. But here's something I want you to think about - I don't like hot dogs anymore, nor do I like tacos, and the few times I have ordered a Subway Sandwich I was very disappointed. One of the wonderful things that happens during this process is that as you relearn how to eat in a healthy manner, most of the things you mentioned lose appeal. The quality of those foods is pretty low. Admittedly, I still enjoy sushi and sashimi and an elegant gourmet thin crust pizza.

Some people may give you a hard time for thinking/posting about those foods so soon post op, but I've been around long enough to know thinking doesn't mean eating - especially during this post op liquid only phase! Enjoy your food fantasies! 

Suggestion: Take that curiosity and start planning tasty VSG appropriate meals for your puree stage and soft food stage. You can have a lot of fun planning. One of my favorite things was creating new versions of egg bites. Another favorite was Shelly's Ricotta Bake. Great question, I wondered the same. Learning about nutrition, food choices and cooking are key for both eating at home and eating out.

I only took an interest in cooking after VSG as a matter of survival.

The equation is pretty simple, eat the wrong foods on a regular basis......... guess what..... you gain weight.

The bright side is that I enjoy food more now than ever, it is proper quality foods over quantity.

The down side for me, cake, cookies and candy still call my name and I know I'm not fixed just as long as I want ice cream more than broccoli.

Basically, the short answer is "yes if you figure out a way to do all protein and no carbs."

SUSHI-- sashimi only. Rice is no bueno, so skip the nigiri or rolls, though some chefs will do sorta-nigiri on cucumber sticks if you ask nicely.

HOT DOGS-- just fine if you skip the bun. Brats, sausages, hot dogs, all good sources of protein.

Subway-- opt for meatballs in a cup with cheese and veggies, or just lunchmeat. Salad is unnecessary filler and bread is a no-go, even wheat or flatbread, even in maintenance.

Tacos-- if you're thinking "stuff in a taco shell or tortilla," the answer is "probably not." Taco meat with cheese and hot sauce is just peachy, though, and there are lots of protein options available at Mexican restaurants. Carne asada and fajita fillings are good choices.

Spicy-- absolutely! Some people have trouble with reflux, but many have spicy with no problem. I've got a whole pantry full of curry seasoning, hot sauces, and the like to spice up chicken breast, shrimp, and other protein.

Yes, you'll be physically able to eat all those things and more.  But if you stick to your plan now, you're going to discover that you won't WANT to eat all those things.  The full liquid phase is hard, and you spend a lot of time thinking about and grieving food.  It passes.  The first soft food I had was tuna mixed with cheese, and I thought I had died and gone to heaven.
