Who here had BMI 60+ and got sleeved?

The studies show pretty equal results between the 2 surgeries. If for any reason the sleeve doesn't take off all your weight you can add on the DS or duodenal switch for even more weight loss. The switch adds malabsorbtion to the sleeve and can help get to goal if the sleeve just won't do it anymore. I think you'll do just fine with the sleeve, most folks do!

I haven't had surgery yet, BMI of 40. Just a suggestion to choose a surgeon that does all the surgeries: VSG, Bypass and Duodenal Switch, so that they can give you an honest and truthful opinion on what will work best for you and your medical cir****tances. Then they aren't guiding you to a surgery just because they don't offer something that may be a better option.  Wishing you the best in making your decision.

I'm new to the sleeve. I had my surgery on 2/18/16 and BMI was 62 on the day of surgery. I lost 17.5 lbs in the first week! I know this surgery will be a success for me but I also know if I don't follow the program and eat right I can stretch my stomach back out. My surgeon recommended the sleeve for me and not bypass due to my size and age. Hope that helps! Good luck!

MY BMI was 84.1 on 9/9/2014. (537lbs, 5'7"). Today I weigh 191lbs with a BMI of 29.9. All I had was a sleeve. I lost 346lbs in 538days.

I just had a sleeve and followed my plan. I continue to follow my plan. I want to get 185 then start upping my calories. I also had plastics done in 12/23/2015 to remove excess skin and an extended abdominoplasty. That was 12lbs.

In July I plan to have my excess breast tissue removed (I'm a male). I may also have a circumferential procedure done as well. Finally it will be my thighs. Once all that is done I will be put back together.

Also what's your plan. What kind of diet you follow? How often you work out and what do you do?

I was on a liquid diet for 2 months prior to surgery. 70g protein, 30g of carb diet. Protein shakes, water, black coffee, tea, jello, broth, SF popsicles. Lost 64lbs preop.

Had surgery 11/3/2014

Worked up to solid food. Was on a 70g protein, 30g of carb diet (about 700 cals). Usually a protein shake or two a day. And lean meat and veggies. All carbs were from protein shakes or veggies. All veggies and meat were organic, humanely raised, and local when possible.

Started walking the day after surgery. Each day a bit further. Started in the gym in December 2014 working out 3 days with a trainer, 3 days of cardio.

Steadily lost weight, plateaued maybe one time.

My job is a software developer. I work from home. Can get up and move anytime I like (and I do), never sit more than an hour.

I am still on this plan, I eat a few more carbs (try to stay under 60) and sometimes 1000 calories a day but mostly stick at about 700-800. I still avoid all junk. I might eat like one chip just to remind myself or a bite of pizza.  I do drink diet soda now and caffeine (coffee). Just protein shakes, meat, and veggies. Everyday.

I don't recall what my BMI was pre-op, but I had VSG in October 2011 and lost 202 pounds. I went from a size 32-34 to a 10-12.

No more B/P meds, normal cholesterol and triglycerides. No more binge eating!

I am at a happy place right now and had plastic surgery to remove excess skin.

The journey was not easy but so worth it.

good luck.

Thanks for all the advice and personal experiences. I decided on the sleeve. Met with the surgeon today and he agreed sleeve probably better over all with my high bmi. Said it's easier to do on larger people and leads to less complications.

Submitting to insurance tomorrow and he said they'll probably want 3 to 6 months of diet. I first talked to dietitian last month so they said om already on month 2. Been a week of low carbing and lost 11lb. I'd like to get close to 400 before surgery.

Again thanks everyone.
