Who here had BMI 60+ and got sleeved?

Everything is great.  Thanks for asking.  I just returned from a month in New Zealand and Australia.  The internet on the cruise ship was expensive and not great quality, so I was out of touch.

We had a delightful vacation.  What a beautiful, diverse place.  Every time I vacation, I check one place off my bucket list, and add three more!

The best news is that I only gained 4 pounds.  Previous cruises have added 2 pounds per week, so this is much better than expected.

best wishes,

Carol

RNY on 08/21/12

Now I'm jealous. I'm glad you had such a great time.

In the past, all I would have thought about with a cruise was nonstop eating. It sounds like you did great.

Welcome back.

My bmi was in mid 60s at 490, lost 68 prior to surgery, toughest part of the whole process for me .

16 months

down to 239

bmi is 30

16 inches off my waist

4xxxx smaller tee shirts. I can buy em at walmart , couldnt buy 5 or 6 xlt tees anywhere.

and still dropping pounds. heck, my feet are a full size smaller. lol

I had a bunch of stalls, if you think those will bother you. they did me at first but not so much now.

It seemed that the best losses always followed a stall. kinda like a stair step graph with no straight lines.

It got easier after I started averaging losses unstead of looking at daily numbers.

as for issues, rny has its drawbacks also. sleeve is much less invasive, no rerouting . just restriction.

They left 12% of my stomach and I rarely use it all. lol

Im proof it works, not easy, but very worth the effort.

good luck

I love my sleeve

Thanks for all the replies and the support.

It's nice to hear so many great success  stories!

I think I'm going to do the sleeve. Meeting with surgeon next week then submitting to insurance. Going to try and lose as much as possible before surgery. Down 2lb this week so far on the good old low carb diet.

Thanks again you guys are awesome.

Be sure and really read Cappy's response, there is a beautiful cautionary tale in there.  No matter what WLS you choose, the biggest predictor of success is keeping with the plan both in weight loss and in maintenance.  I think there actually might be clinical evidence to back that statement up....but I can't produce it :)

While there are lots of successful paths, I always found low carb most effective for me, too.  I'm excited for you!

Thanks.

The dietitian said I could lose equal amounts of weight with either surgery as long as I stick with the plan. But I'm sure she also thinks I could lose the same with no surgery by sticking with the plan. Lol.

Yeah I've lost a lot of weight with low carb a couple times.  Just couldn't keep it off.

RNY on 02/01/16

Go with your feelings on it, but I got the RNY on February 1st, because it's called the gold standard it's the best chance of losing the weight and I want to honestly tell you the weight is not coming off like I thought it would so what I'm saying is if it's this hard to lose weight with an RNY,  I can't imagine trying for a Sleeve. I've lost 14 pounds in 27 days and I'm not cheating, the sleeve will be even slower., I just wanted to share my experience

Om sure it's like anything else. It works differently for everyone. One reason I was flip flopping eas because a girl I went school with got the bypass and lost over 200lb in a year.

If you lose 14 a month that's 168 a year. Sounds pretty fast too me.

I'm sorry to hear that the weight loss is slower than you anticipated.  I always worry when I see posts with huge weight losses because that's not the reality for most of us, and it sets unrealistic expectations.

14 pounds in a month is not bad!  I think you'll have less frustration and more success if you shift your thinking on this. Early on someone told me "the weight loss process is not a sprint, its a marathon."   Does it really matter how fast you lose the weight if every month you weigh less and are healthier and have more energy?  Does it really matter if you are at goal at 6 months, or 1 year? or 18 months? or 2 years?

I view maintenance as just another plan with a few extra calories and a little more flexibility.  This is a life-long effort to manage our obesity.  Its not over when we finish losing the weight.  WLS is a treatment for obesity.  It isn't a cure.  We have to be in this for the long run.

So try to look at the big picture. My best weight loss was 20 pounds in a month, and I lost 225 pounds in 18 months.  It adds up over time.

best wishes,

Carol
