Who here had BMI 60+ and got sleeved?

I'm 5'11" HW 478 BMI 61

I was all set on getting the sleeve. But I'm worried I wont lose enough weight with it. When I meant with my surgeons nurse practitioner she made it sound like high BMI are better off getting bypass. I've just read about so many people that have had the bypass that have issues.

So I'm hoping to hear from some other people that started close to 500lb or 60+ BMI and see how your success has been.

Thanks in advanced.

My BMI was 67 when I started my journey but I got it down to 50 pre-surgery. Sorry I couldnt be more help, as I am only 1 month out. :( Your doctor may recommend one surgery over the other, but my advice is to go with what you want and what you think will work best for you. Good luck!

My BMI was 54 when I was sleeved on 2014.  I did not have much success with the sleeve and I am looking into getting a revision to the RNY.  I wish I would have went with the RNY in the first place.

My BMI was over 60 prior to surgery. I decided to lose as much weight as possible prior to surgery (after looking at research that suggests having a BMI over 50 is a risk factor for complications). My BMI was like 49.9 day of surgery. I got down from 422-188 post surgery. I regained some weight cause I never dealt with the real issues that drove me to eat but I'm losing again at nearly 5 yrs post op.

You can absolutely lose the weight with the sleeve. There have been plenty of sleevers with high BMIs that have been successful. It will ultimately come down to your commitment and motivation and willingness to do ANYThING necessary to be successful.

I'm always happy to chat more about the struggles and success I've had - both initially and now as I lose the regain. Just send me a message.

I started with a BMI of 59.9 and have done quite well. That said, my surgeon recommended the sleeve for me because of autoimmune problems I have (and that run in my family) where the meds might be problematic with a bypass. Without that issue, the bypass would probably have been my first choice.

I recommend that you meet and talk with people who have had the bypass about their experience. See if you can meet people via your surgeon's support group, or another local weight loss support group. I think it's important to hear from people directly, rather than relying on horror stories you've read about. If we all did that, none of us would get any kind of weight loss surgery.

I know many people who have had bypass and they all are doing great, both with weight loss and overall health. They don't look or act any different than the sleevers I know -- except they lose weight faster.

My BMI was over 70 when I started the process.  I haven't reached my goal, but I have surpassed my expectations.  If I never lose another pound, I feel so much better than I could have imagined.

The sleeve can work for the SSMO, but you have to be diligent and mindful.  It's not magical and requires effort, but it is the best thing I have ever done for myself.

I had a bmi of 57 when I started & I chose the sleeve & am happy with my choice. I'm still in active weight loss mode but I should reach goal by this summer.

Research all you can, you can have issues with any wls.

BMI about 61 when started the process.  BMI was about 52 on date of surgery.  Current BMI is about 21.5.

I know my surgeon's group has a slight preference for RNY for folks of my starting weight. But my oncologist preferred whichever surgery was thought to have fewer drug absorption issues just in case it might matter for me in the future.

Best wishes in your journey!

H Lee,

I had a BMI of 60.5 and weighed 385 pounds when I started the sleeve process.  I lost 98% of my excess body weight and now  I have a normal BMI.  I weigh 162 pounds with a BMI of 24, and I've been maintaining for almost 2 years.

So you can do it!  The weight loss surgery really works.  it takes discipline and a commitment to following the rules, but the WLS makes it possible.

When I started the program, I had a friend/acquaintance who was urging me to have WLS.  She had the surgery about 5 years before I did, so when I finally decided to do it I called her, expecting her to be delighted.  But she told me she had gained most of her weight back.  This put the fear of God in me.  She had been so committed to the weight loss and totally blew it.  Basically, she did not bother following the rules.  She drank liquids with her meals, she got into grazing rather than eating meals, she ate carbs and junk food.  She did ok for the first 18 months, but started to gain after that and never got control again.

I decided that if I was doing something as drastic as removing over 1/2 my stomach, I was darn-well going to follow the rules and be the most compliant patient.  And it worked.  If you follow the rules, the process works.

I wish you the very best of luck in our weight loss process.  I know how successful it can be and how it can change your life, and I am so excited for you.

best wishes

Carol
