What do you count as liquids?
So, I have heard many different things - even from different nutritionists!
Does a shake count? Since you add in water / almond milk?
Does decaf hot tea count?
Does decaf coffee count?
Obviously water counts
I have heard tea, coffee, and shakes don't count. But I have also heard they do. Just need clarification since other WLS patients ask me, and I don't want to give false information.
Thanks!
my dietitian wants us to not count protein drinks as part of our liquid goal.. so I don't, I count everything else.. broths, tea, coffee
I drink coffee everyday, but I don't count that as my liquids. I only coun****er, green tea & the crystal light I drink. My NUT post surgery has instructed me not to count coffee. I never asked the reasoning behind it....I thought it had something to do with dehydration and caffeine. I'll ask her next time I see her.

You get some liquid even from a juicy piece of meat. So really, anything you mentioned helps with hydration. But as you can see from other responses, some count those things, others don't. Getting in extra fluids never hurts, but if you are hitting 64 ounces, counting coffee, tea, almond milk, etc, you're OK.

Anything I drink is a liquid. It's a myth that caffeinated stuff is dehydrating.

There is no scientific basis to exclude tea or coffee, whether it has caffeine or not. Luckily my dietitian didn't try to foist some mythological stuff about coffee and tea on me, or I would have had to break out my "show me the peer reviewed contemporary studies on that" stance, and I would have hated to get confrontational with her at the very outset!
I count everything...because of that usually get higher than 64oz... Doc's office says don't count more than 16oz of caffeinated beverages...
