Any advice on how to keep these vitamins down?

I am getting Bariatric Advantage vitamins through the mail.  Just started them this week and I have thrown up all that I have taken.  I am now taking them after eating food in the morning. Just threw them up again. I know I need them...help!

My meal this morning was yogurt.

Well, you don't need that specific brand and also it takes several weeks for most vitamin deficiencies to take any sort of hold or effect. So, don't start feeling panicky and stressed about what is going on right now. It shouldn't hurt to hold off a week or two and try later. Alternatively, try something easier to absorb like liquid vitamins or patch vitamins (no chance of throwing up a patch you stick on your skin!).

I am not a fan of the bariatric specialty vitamins as they (ironically) tend to be super high in calories and carbs. I never took a bariatric specialty vitamin and my labs have always been great.

When it sits in the stomach, they can have that reaction. You want to take them with water, even if they are chewable. As much water as you can, no food. You want to wash them through your stomach and into your intestine. Food will just close the pyloric valve and trap them in the stomach, causing distress.

I will do that.  Thats what is great about these boards.  You get the help you need.  Here's hoping your advice does the trick.

Thanks Grim, this is advice I greatly needed. I've been taking chewable vitamins WITH food and it's made me nauseous every single time. Makes a lot of sense what you said.

You might have to change brands...I started out before surgery using a brand with no difficulty, but then after surgery they were terrible and made me feel miserably nauseated! I have since switched brands and have been very happy with them! Good luck!

If none of the above suggestions work, hold off a few more weeks and try again. You won't drop over from scurvy without your vitamins short-term. Constantly throwing up so soon after surgery is far more serious than a very temporary vitamin deficiency.

I used to crush my vitamins and mix them in plain greek yogurt because my pot-surgery tummy revolted at anything sweet.  It worked for me.

best of luck,

I had to switch to a vitamin patch as I had a really hard time with the chewables.
