Goulash soup???

Goulash and Goulash soup are usually two different things. I am familiar with both being the good German son I am! Goulash uses the cubed beef, but when my mom made the soup she actually ground the stew beef up (we had a hand grinder that clamped on the counter) then browned it before putting it in beef stock with all the seasonings. She also added diced vegetables (carrots and potato) to the soup, whereas the goulash was only meat and gravy.

I have a very good recipe for goulash soup from Mimi Sheraton's The German Cookbook. PM me if you are interested. She does it very much the same way as my mom did, but doesn't add carrots like my mom did and doesn't grind the meat. Like sauerkraut, Goulash and Goulash soup differ depending upon the region from which they come.

Hi Karik,

The grinding of the meat makes perfect sense compared to what I had at the restaurant. I appreciate your offer on the recipe, and I will PM you. Thank you!

So day two of the goulash was more of a heavy meat stew/sauce due to my doubling or more of the ground beef. Ended up grilling up a few slabs of leftover grits from breakfast, and poured it over the top. I think I have a new favorite meal!

When I brown ground meat I use my potato masher to break it up and it can be turned into some pretty tiny stuff that way!

This worked! I am pretty sure this must be similar to what the restaurant did!!!  Thank you, I would have never thought of doing that!

My kids really like it there. I think it is obscene portion size at a modest cost, and that is about it ;)
