my surgery is scheduled and I want to begin the liver shrinking thing right now....but my meeting with the Dr isn't until Dec 30 when I will get info on that from them.  In the meantime...any idea where I can get details on that so I can begin sooner?  Thanks, in advance, for your thoughts.  Also...I want to try some of the protein options in the next few weeks so I don't dread the taste of the supplements.  Your favorites?  Thx! Cheryl

Congrats! Mine is probably going to be scheduled on Jan 28th! Ill definitely keep you in mind that week :)  I believe they want you to do the low carb diet to shrink the liver. Read up on the atkins plan - Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution is the book.

Cheers!

My program had us "eat the way we will after surgery" as a way to prepare for the surgery.  We also had a week on liquids only, but that was much harder.

What I'd suggest is using the time before surgery to practice the way you will eat after surgery.  This includes

  • eat only 3 to 4 ounces of dense protein per meal
  • eat dense protein first
  • Then fill up on low carb veggies - broccoli cauliflower, green beans, salads, etc.
  • My program then allowed 1/2 cup of starches like rice, potatoes, etc. but I know carbs cause cravings for me, so I omitted these foods.
  • eat small bites
  • eat slowly
  • avoid liquids for 30 minutes before and after meals
  • avoid high calorie foods

You'll benefit from any weight you lose before surgery, making the surgery safer, and reducing the amount we need to lose after surgery.  I lost 50 pounds in 3 months before surgery and I am so glad I did.

best wishes,

Carol
